Does the new version support MQA?
« on: June 17, 2016, 10:59:55 am »

Sorry if I am out of format but this is my first time on this list.  I have a Meridian Explorer 2 DAC which supports MQA. When I streamed an MQA encoded file through JRiver, it was not detected. Someone from Meridian thought the JRiver does not support MQA. Can someone verify that and if so, will there be a workaround coming?
Thanks,

No.  We don't plan to support MQA.

I believe that since you have a MQA DAC, all MC has to do is pass the bit perfect 16/44 MQA file to it. I would check Audio Path (symbol with 3 vertical lines next to the shuffle icon, top right of Standarc View) to see if MC thinks it is sending a bit perfect file to the DAC. You need to use a WASAPI or ASIO driver, apply no DSPs and either set MC volume to 100% or disable it. Once you have the bit perfect file going to the DAC it should recognize the MQA encoding.

I think that if you play it at 100% volume with all DSP disabled it might work.
Since there is no open decoder for the format, there's no way for JRiver to detect whether something is an MQA file and bitstream it.

Any luck? How are you getting the MQA file into MC?

Yes it works fine, all the computer and player software has to do is pass a bit perfect copy of the MQA file to the input of the DAC. Authentication blue led should then light.

Hopefully not, more interesting work to do e.g. 3D-sound  ;D

Asked if there was any chance Schiit Audio might support MQA if it became the dominant format in the market, Moffat answered, “If it becomes the dominant audio technology, or even a very popular second-place format, we would have to evaluate it in the same way we evaluate other lossy compression standards, such as home theater surround formats, Bluetooth codecs, and MP3 variants.”

vs this

and Tidal adoption and its subsequent integration with Roon.

The Schiit guys aren't ruling out MQA entirely. As toomanybarts points out, the door is open for market forces to walk through.

Personally, I think there's sense in holding off when one considers what open source / "free" codecs offer. Couple that with the advance of technology, so that even if there's no new "better" unlicenced codec that comes along, I can see faster internet speeds and wider bandwidth will bridge the gap - if it hasn't already for some.

So, in the meantime, I'll watch from the sidelines.
