Takes up 25% of my i5 CPU
« on: June 25, 2016, 10:43:34 am »

I love this app as it's the best alternative to MediaMonkey on OS X that I can find. What bothers me is how it's not a native Mac app and it takes up so many resources. I imported in my library a month ago and it's still sluggish. Please see the screenshot.

I also took a sample of the process to see what all the app is doing. If a developer could look at this and tell me what's up, I'd appreciate it. I just extended the trial and not sure I will buy it if this isn't improved as it causes the music to stutter.

I also took a sample: http://pastebin.com/HbnBqBB5

Here are my specs:
 Processor Name:   Intel Core i5
  Processor Speed:   3.39 GHz
  Number of Processors:   1
  Total Number of Cores:   4
L2 Cache (per Core):   256 KB
  L3 Cache:   6 MB
  Memory:   24 GB
  Bus Speed:   400 MHz

Actually, MC for Mac is indeed a native OS X application. That said, it uses it's own framework to draw windows, menus, etc.

My guess is auto import is running in the background and/or thumbnails are being built and/or analyze audio is running in the background. If those features are enabled, you might want to try disabling them and see if it makes any difference. Those can be CPU consuming tasks.

You do realize that your CPU has 4 cores, and MC is only taking up 25% of one core right?  So it's consuming roughly 6.25% of your CPU in total.

My MBP has a quad core i7 and MC takes around 10% (up to 15%) while playing audio.  Again, this is of one core out of four.

If MC behaves slowly, Awesome Donkey might be right:  You might have background tasks running.  Go to:  Help > System info .  Look at background processes and at percentage of thumbnails built.  If you have background tasks running, they slow MC down until MC is done with them. This is really only a first time thing when importing a large library.  Once it's done, it's done and MC will run normally.

If you're experiencing audio dropouts, you should increase the buffering on the Audio device:

Tools > Options > Audio > Audio Device > Device Settings > Buffering > Software > (pick at least 250 mS here; 500 is better)
Tools > Options > Audio > Audio Device > Device Settings > Buffering > Hardware > Hardware default

You might also want to see what you have Integer mode set to on this same screen.  On some DACs, integer mode causes some audio glitches.  If it's on, turn it OFF.

After making all of these changes, save, then stop and restart MC.  Good luck!

Oh you all are right... how much longer would this take?

How do I change the options for cover art? I just want it to automatically take the jpeg file it finds in the album folder. What has to process?

I would do this:

Stop MC
Start MC
Kick off thumbnail generation manually:  Tools > Options > Tree & View > Thumbnails > Build missing thumbnails

Let that run over night.  I'm guessing that will take several hours.  Maybe 3 to 6 hours.  Once it finishes, MC should run much faster.

Good luck!
