I have my server set up and working so that I can successfully access it at home or from the web with port forwarding, and when I use Gizmo from my phone it works fine. However, with my Surface any time I try to play a song JRiver stops responding and hangs for about two minutes before it finally starts to play it. Once the song starts, if I switch to another song it hangs again. I'm using the latest version on both the Server and the Surface (21.0.90) for Windows. Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated.

I only have windows defender running, I have disabled it (on both the client and server side) and it doesn't make a difference. Sometimes the files play instantaneously, sometimes JRiver hangs for a minute or two before playing, and sometimes it completely crashes. Anyone have any other ideas? I can play shared files with foobar2000 and it works just fine.

This helped quite a bit, however I still see about a 30 second lag before an AIFF file plays. About half of my library is Apple lossless, and those play with no delay whatsoever.

Try adding .aiff to "excluded file types" in Windows defender. (And/or in your AV software)..
