JRiver 21.0.91 crashing
« on: July 08, 2016, 07:57:49 pm »

I have been having a long running issue with JRiver crashing on my Mac.  I was running OSX 10.9.5 up until a week ago when the crashing became so frequent, I decided to upgrade my Mac to 10.11.5 to see if that would help.  For a week things seemed ok and now the crashing is back tonight.  I have turned off auto updates of my library as someone previously suggested but the issue still exists.  Below is the error from the Apple Crash Reporter.  My library is on a NAS located on my home network and my Mac has the volume mounted via CIFS.  When transferring files from the NAS to Mac or Mac to NAS I can easily exceed 100Mbps of throughput so I don't think that is the issue.

Anyone else have issues or suggestions to try?

Do you have auto import turned on?  MC might be crashing when it reads a "bad file" in your auto import directory.  This is fairly common actually.  Disable it with:

Tools > Options > Library & Folders > Run auto import in background > (uncheck)

If you want more specific help, MC has it's own built in logging facility.  You can capture a log during the crash and send that to the forum.  Here are the instructions:

http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Logging

Good luck.

That was one of the first things suggested by others as well.  It has been turned off for quite some time now.

I turned on logging several crashes ago - here is the log file.

I'm not great at reading these log files.  But I see numerous entries like this one in the Previous Log.txt .  This one is the last set of lines in the file:

0000000: 2019090432: General: JRWorker::ProcessCommand: Start
0000000: 2019090432: General: JRWorker::ProcessCommand: Unknown command '/AnalyzeQT "/Users/js/Music/iTunes/iTunes Music/Carrie Underwood/Some Hearts/04 Jesus, Take the Wheel.m4p" "/Users/js/Library/Application Support/J River/Media Center 21/Temp/Analyze - 20459520.xml"'
0000000: 2019090432: General: JRWorker::ProcessCommand: Task completed in 0 ms, result = -1
0000000: 2019090432: General: JRWorker::ProcessCommand: Finish (0 ms)

It looks like it's trying to run audio analysis via something called "AnalyzeQT", but it can't find that command.  All of these lines are referencing Apple Protected files:  Ones that end in .M4P .

I don't know if this is the problem or not, but it seems unusual.  Does MC support Apple Protected files on the Mac platform?  I'm not even sure they are supported by MC on Windows...

Seeing the .m4p extension mentioned makes me think it's trying to import a protected (DRM'd) file and failing.

I did let it import my iTunes library.   The import is ok with an error or two.   That being said why would the application randomly crash when there is no import activity.   Sometimes the crash will occur when the app is idle or when playing music.   I tried switching DACs too and it didn't change the behavior.

I love the app and have paid for my third upgrade but this is driving me crazy.

I would remove all of the M4P files as a test.  Make a Library Backup first, so you can go back.  After removing the M4P files from the Library, test and see if MC still crashes, or if it's suddenly stable again.

This is starting to become a bit of a mystery now.

That file exists on my HD but NOT in my library.  In my Import settings, iTunes isn't listed in the auto import  (i probably did it once and not again).

Is that job to Analyze in the configuration some place and I can remove it?

It's not in your library because MC can't import it because it's a protected audio file. If you try moving the .m4p file(s) to a different location to where MC is actively running auto-import, it might help.

Let's take one file as an example.  So a file like /Users/smitty/Music/Itunes Music/crash.m4p .

...and you're saying that you can't find that file in your library.  And that folder, or a folder above it is not listed in your Auto Import configuration?  I'm not sure what's going on if that's the case.  I would think MC would only try to import files that were in an auto import folder.  Or folders that you manually told it to import.

For I don't know how long or for how many versions, but MC often crashes when I close it, and especially if it has been open for some time, say for over five hours. If left alone for a long time, it simply freezes. Still happens in 20.0.91. I can quit using the menu bar, so it all looks good, but when I reopen it, it says it quit unexpectedly last time and generates a crash report. I dutifully check the yes, restart, and the report gets sent off to whoever. If I were still a programmer (I'm retired), I would start searching for memory leaks.

Two requests for MC2.

1. Can the crashing be fixed?
2. Can MC remember the font size settings from one day to the next?

Bells and whistles and added functionality are great, but I would really like to see stability and consistency addressed first.

Thanks

Doug

JRiver UI freezes on my MAC after a while .....
« Reply #12 on: July 28, 2016, 07:57:24 am »

I find that the UI always freezes on my MAC after a while and is unresponsive however JRiver continues to function via JRemote on my ipad. I have to quit the App on my IMAC to clear the screen but if I minimise the UI window before it freezes I just leave it.

Only the window and its controls freeze the menu options on the menu bar still function!

As stated previously it would be nice to get these issues fixed before adding more functionality.

I've had quite a number of these freezes myself.  I should qualify that though.  I normally see these once every couple of weeks.  Lately, with some tagging work I've been doing, it happens as much as 3 or 4 times a day.  The more I "exercise" the interface, the more frequently the freezes happen.  In my case, the interface sorta still works.  You can see that new files are being selected in the tagging window.  But everything else is "stuck".  No scroll bars, no updates in the main window, etc.

Oh and I should mention that I've had these through all of MC21 and *maybe* in MC20?  I just can't remember to be sure about MC20.

I thought I would update my post on my status.  Since posting this, trying a few things, generating the logs, nothing seemed any better.  About a week later, I tried the app again - and things have been great.  The unfortunate part is that I didn't change anything since I was having y stability issues.  Same MBP, same library (maybe a few new things but not much), same NAS etc.

I just sent my logs off to Brad as he requested - perhaps it will shed some light.  Knock on wood - JRiver continues to run as stable as it has the last couple weeks!

Cheers

Usually within an hour the JRiver Window on my IMAC has frozen and the only option is to quit the app, I just usually minimise on start up and run from my ipad.

However after reading the thread yesterday I turned on logging for the first time and the app did not freeze all day! This morning I turned logging off and the window froze shortly after starting as always.

Therefore having logging on stops the window freezing. Does this help with finding the problem and solution.

Addendum  - just checked and JRiver not frozen yet so it is not clear what is happening!

However today it has frozen again after a few minutes so there is a definite problem

If it's still freezing while you have logging enabled, can you post a log after it freezes again? This might tell us what process is taking so long. You might also want to include a description of what you were doing at the time it froze.

Brad, I have sent you a logging file to the email you posted above as it is too large to post, hope it will help.

Freezing takes much longer when logging is on but when I think I know somthing the situation changes!
What is certain though is that JRiver window frequently freezes but the exact circumstances change but it is much quicker with logging off. Today I have logging on and it has run all morning with no problem so there must be some interaction.

If you need anything more let me know.

Many thanks Karl

JRiver still freezing. The window freezes and can't be moved.
Enabling logging on seems to prevent it, or almost.
The menu bar still works.

I have just discovered that selecting the mini player view unfreezes the window and then selecting standard view again the window is no longer frozen.

Does this shed any light on the problem?
