Which tags internal to the MKV file format does JRiver read?


Since "Improved Access to Metadata" is listed as a v22 goal, will writing tags directly to MKV files (not a sidecar) be added?

I'm not sure writing tags to MKV files is possible without remuxing

You can edit MKV tags using MKVToolnix without remuxing, so it is possible.

MetaX seems to write tags without remixing as well. I've fooled around with the MKV spec and a hex editor, and it looks reasonably straight forward to do.

I would be willing to write a straightforward c/c++ implementation if JRiver is interested... message me.

As for the first half of my question, does anyone have the list of MKV tags JRiver honors?

From what I've observed, MC reads the mkv metadata for:

• Title
• Video Track Name
• Audio Track Name
• Sub-title Track Name
• Chapter Names

- anyone for anything I've missed?

I've found the "Edit Header" functionality of MKVToolNix to be a very handy way of directly tidying up video metadata.

Agreed. It would be a big plus if MC could deal with this directly.

MetaX is a good tool as well. It'll look up tags/art/chapter names/etc and write them, although it has a fairly limited selection of tags it will write.

(I'm serious about the c/c++ implementation. I'll probably write one anyway for my own use)
