64-bit version of JRiver
« on: August 03, 2016, 08:50:33 am »

The memory reading stuff has a hard cap at 1.5 GB (since that's all we'd be able to allocate anyway).
Is a 64-bit version of JRiver ever going to happen?
1.5GB is plenty if you're playing CD-quality audio (typically 600MB an album) but not much if you're playing high-res.

It's a bigger problem for video though. The server is constantly crashing for me now that I'm starting to watch more 4K video in ROHQ.
If I'm playing a 4K video and something else is going on at the same time - if a family member starts playing media in another zone or the analyzer was running - the player crashes hard and just disappears.
Video decoding performance is also being held back in 32-bit compared to 64-bit.

If I send video to an external 64-bit player using madVR it's completely stable, but I want to keep everything in JRiver.
I put 32GB of RAM in my new media server build and it would be nice if this could be utilized.

That would be very nice indeed. Plus in my opinion the implementation of the new "playback from memory" functionality is somehow crippled.

How is it crippled?

Fixed, limited buffer size.  Many of my tracks will not fit.

+1. This will be very useful for CPU decoding of HEVC UHD 10 bit content. I have a Core i7 4790K and with 64 bit playback, my system fluidly plays 10 bit UHD content up to 30 fps using CPU decoding. I would very much want to use JRiver's 64 bit version here.

+1 However I don't thing it will happen any time soon as I am sure they use the same code base for the Linux and MAC versions. I also seem to recall that their was something to do with the LAV filters that they use which is not a JRiver product.

The new Intel Skylake CPU has HEVC decoding and encoding built in and it would be nice if JRiver supported this.

The LAV filters that are developed by Hendrik, hired by JRiver?!

This has really nothing to do with the lack of a 64-bit build of MC on Windows.

I'm sure a 64-bit Windows build could be compiled right now, but very likely parts of the codebase and some features may not work like they would in the 32-bit build or would need to be updated to work with a 64-bit build (and likely there's some legacy code to deal with first). It's something that shouldn't be rushed into.

And I'm sure we'll eventually see 64-bit Windows MC binaries, since it actually makes more sense now than it did several years ago.

Personally, I rather see all of MC's executables and DLL files signed with SHA-1 (for XP and whatnot) and SHA-256 so antivirus issues will become a thing of the past.

I don't work for JRiver... I help keep the forums safe from "male enhancements" and other sources of sketchy pharmaceuticals.
