Hey all,

I've just gotten a laptop with wireless on our network but now I'm in a complicated situation. The laptop audio bites of course so I am wondering if there is a way to select tracks on the laptop but then instruct our home theatre PC to play them. Sort of like a remote control for the home system.

That way I can select tracks from the laptop in the backyard but still have it all play on the speakers we've wired up out there - which are of course powered by an amp inside the house.

However I can't tell from the docs what it needs to run. Can anyone double check me here?

So I d/l and install net remote but do I need girder as well or just media jukebox? If MC then what do I do to it on the home pc in order for it to listen for commands from net remote?

I'll spend some time with it and post my results.

Actually this turned out to be quite easy. Media Center has it built in.

For anyone else in need of remote assistance:

Just open the options menu in tools and select startup

Enable the Media Server and select a port (The default 8080 is fine.

On your remote pc (in my case the laptop) type in the Playing PC's IP address followed by the port. (In my case 192.168.0.4:8080)

Then bam you've got a webpage with playing now, media library, playlists, and a controls section for forward, back, shuffle, et al.

Couldn't be easier... or cooler.

Wow!  I had no idea this feature existed.

I have XP Pro on both machines so I use Remote Desktop and control the media pc from my laptop that way.  This remote feature gives me yet another option.  So now I can access my media library through Remote Desktop, the remote web page feature, and Tivo.  Do you think I have all my bases covered?

Netremote, Glissando, and MusicLobby can all control MC.  Some info on Netremote and Glissando can be found in one of the threads at the top of this board.

I took a look at net remote but found the documentation lacking. It also crashed a lot but I would assume that was me not setting things up properly.

All I needed really though was a method of picking tracks and transport controls which the media server had built in. So I'd say if you're looking for some basic EASY to set up remote control just stick with the out-the box approach.

My next problem is the media server locks up if I tell the system to play a video (DivX or Mpeg). What's up with that?

With 9.1, WebRemote is built in to MC as RemoteServer and is configured in MC options.

Do you mean that the HTML interface for the remote web pages can be customized?  Where are those HTML pages?  I can't seem to find them when I look in the J River directory.

I've been searching the forum and trying to make netRemote work.

I've got the Media server running.

On the client PC, what software and settings are people using? When you say netRemote is built in, does that mean that if I have MC running on the client there is some screen that allows me to view and control the media server? How?  If not, the what should I install beond the basic software (ver 0.98) from www.netremote.org.  At the net remote website, it says that I must also install int_webremote.mjp.  How do I install this?

Also, using the client PC, I would like to be able to launch and view a web browser on the server PC, browse to a website, and play a real audio file (NPR replays). How can I do this other than using netMeeting?

I've got the Media server running.

It doesn't need Media Server.  It works with RemoteServer, which is built in to MC.  You must have the right version of NetRemote to do this.  The website is www.netremote.org .

Check that you have RemoteServer running, under startup in the options.

At the net remote website, it says that I must also install int_webremote.mjp.

That's not true any longer if you use MC.

PS:  I just installed ver 9.1 for the first time and WOW! Lots of great additions!

There's a new version of NetRemote just out (0.99) and it has never crashed or given me any problems. But you need a new remote server, so your best bet is to go to the download page of netremote.org and use the NetRemote suite. That will download and install all you need.
