Having recently reinstalled my OS and no longer being able to, can someone please run through the most efficient way to play back iso DVD and Blu ray rips, please?

Easiest way is to rip everything to MKV.
You can convert ISO rips to MKV easily too.

I know about mkv, and they are my default. But I have ISO too so just looking for best way with them. Eg I load a disc to check episodes, subtitles etc.

I have JRiver send my DVD and Blu-ray ISO files to Kodi.

Yeah, I want MC to play them by default though.

You can play them with JRiver if you mount them first. Otherwise, I don't know any way to play ISOs directly (except SACD). It's why I still have to use Foobar (for DVD-A ISOs) and Kodi (for DVD-V and Blu-ray ISOs) and JRiver for everything else.

That's what I meant by "mounting" them. It works but there are two drawbacks - it requires another step to mount the file first before playing it, and you can only mount one file at a time.

I admit I'm only doing this with video, but in MC I configure iso files to open with an external program (vcd) and then they work like any other file type.

NOt really true. PLay with the VCD settings. You can assign multiple virtual drives, so that you can mount more than one at a time. Also, you can set it to automount whenever you try to play an ISO in JRiver MC.

That's good to know, but it's easier to just send the files to Kodi. It would help the OP to play the files directly with JRiver though if you can mount multiple virtual drives.

Yes I have virtual clone drive. They do seem to mount but not play. Do I need to configure MC at all. It's been years since I set it up before using tmt6 to run them externally, but what I want to do now is have MC play them by default.

Yes you configure this in options. You can set it so that as soon as MC detects a disc it will play. And BCD takes care of making MC think a disc has been loaded.

JFYI...
you don't have to use a third party utility to mount ISOs. W10 can mount cd, dvd & blu-ray iso's with a right click/mount. unmount is  a right click/eject.
can't remember if it was this way for W7.

I use WinCDEmu to mount isos.
And in the options, I set File type as on the attached image.
So then, MC plays isos automatically.

If not I can share my settings. I use VCD to auto mount, then MC auto plays the mounted drive. It's seemless.
