I'm using a fanless PC for music and video playback using jriver media centre 21. This PC had windows 8.1 which I upgraded to windows 10 when Microsoft offered a free upgrade. I recently hooked my music PC up after finishing my renovation and discovered that my ssd drive has failed. Bios isn't recognising it when tested on 2 PCs. So sadly it looks like I might have to buy a windows 10 licence as I prefer windows 10. Also I am thinking of getting Audiophile Optimiser which requires Windows 10. Can anyone please advise which version of windows 10 is optimal for music and video playback? Thanks

What type of Windows 8 license did you have? If it was retail, you don't need to buy a new Windows 10 licence. Check out

Audiophile Optimiser

This is audiophile snake oil, and I wouldn't bother with this. There is nothing wrong with the sound on Windows 7/8.1/10 if you're outputting sound using WASAPI Exclusive or ASIO - both are bit-perfect already.

P.S. JRiver Media Center doesn't support third-party snake oil apps/"optimizers" like Audiophile Optimizer, JPLAY and claims that Windows Server is better for audio.

If all you're doing is changing the hard drive and you don't have a retail licences, you should still be able to use your old licence.

Any license should do. Replacing os drive should not bring you over the limit. I have even succeeded in porting an OEM win7 (now upgraded to win10 home) to a new motherboard, but that required a phone call to Microsoft support. Nice guys there!

Correct that we don't recommend and do discourage use of "optimizers".  The idea that killing normal system processes will improve audio is absurd.  Most modern computers are loafing along when playing audio, using around 1% of CPU power.

I think the issue is that SSD failure is unlikely and it's more likely to be a configuration issue if you just installed windows 10 and renovated your PC (unless I'm misunderstanding)

It took me ages to work out how to get my bios to recognise my M2 SSD because of various bios settings.

Have you changed motherboard when you built a fanless PC???

If you get the SSD working then your Windows 10 license is on there.....
