Hi, as the subject states, I'm new and with no knowledge of digital media. I'm 57 y/o and retired. I'm also an audiophile and my system is all tubes. I like good sound. I just got myself my first laptop also (retirement present) and I'm setting it up with JR media center in order to use it with a DAC as another source component. My new laptop uses Windows 10. Having said that, I just learned after downloading the free version that I need to select an audio output code or something like that. I believe one is Asio, Kernel streaming and the likes. I would like to know what is the consensus among the JR mc devotees as the best one or most compatible one. Thank you for your time.

If your DAC maker provides an ASIO driver, use that. If not, use WASAPI. Kernel streaming is an older format that is not really needed anymore. Direct sound is to be avoided. At least those would be the recommendations pre W10.

If using WASAPI, choose Advanced Options and choose Exclusive Mode.

Thanks for your response. My DAC is the VALAB and it was purchased in early 2009. I'm gonna check on it.

Note I just added the use of Exclusive Mode comment  for WASAPI. Don't know the DAC but it is unlikely it has an ASIO driver from back then. WASAPI should be fine.

I selected WASAPI but I don't see the advanced options.

Its called device settings, rather than advanced settings, sorry. It is right under the WASAPI line. Check the first line "Open Line for Exclusive Access" if it is not checked already.
