MC in other languages
« on: July 18, 2003, 06:52:34 am »

Would be nice if J River adds possibility to translate MC into different languages. Like Opera browser or many programs have plain textfiles anybody can edit with text editor like notepad to translate program into your own language. This way you could also create an altenative english languagefile if you don't like the way J River names things in MC.
The default language would be what there is now, but you could select language file from options to override default english.
There is a lot non-english MC users who would like to have MC in their own language and also many who would like to translate it and send their language files to J Rivers download section.

What do you think?

Maybe something like that is closer than we think...take a look at (or even edit ;)) the "Resource.xml" in MC's "...\Data\Default Resources" folder...

Hey knickelfarz,

Can those lines be edited at no risk?

I played around with the file, and I had no problems with it.  I used Notepad to edit it, and since I was inserting Korean characters, I had to save it with UTF-8 encoding.

I don't think J River would encourage users to mess around with their system files, but perhaps they wouldn't mind so much if you volunteered to do the translations for them. ;)

I would prefer that there be a language editor program and a user would line by line convert that into there own language, when done this be chacked by more than one person that knows the language.

when done it be posted as a downloadable plug-in

That doesn't seem an optimal solution...  foreign languague support should be available at the time of installation.  If I were a betting man, I'd say JRiver will package all the language-specific resource xml files with the installation - and you can choose language at installation time.

If there were foreign language support, I'd suggest MC to ten or so of my Italian friends.

King,

Don't you think that might be quite the exaggeration?  The current Resource.xml is 15 KB.  Including ten languages with the distribution would add a whopping 150 KB to the download.  That's insignificant, even for dial-ups.

Language support will add class to an already classy application.  What percentage of the world speaks English, Chinese, Japenese, French, German, Italian, Russion, Arabic, or Spanish?  Ooops...  that's only nine languages.  I can't think of another biggie

Scott,

Portuguese is No. 10! Brazil has quite a large population!

And you forgot some smaller, but quite important European languages: Dutch (Netherlands), Danish, Swedish, Norwegian, Finnish!

And probably also Hebrew would be important!

And probably Hindu (India) spoken by more people than the whole population of the United States.

But if you allow users to do the translations, you get 60-80 languages right away. Many cheap shareware have language files for that many languages!

King,

you definitely won't wasted 20Mb of space!

20 megs may be a bit much but

it Depends

Since A 1 byte text file takes up 4,096 bytes on the drive formated using WinNt Format (Fat 32 would be larger) it could well be alot of waisted space.

Sure...  but I'm talking about the "low hanging fruit" - ten (or maybe fifteen or twenty) of the most common.  If Pareto's Law fits, 80% of the people speak 20% of the languages.

Yeah, I hear what you're saying.  Cheap shareware probably have an advantage (more users?) than MC (more specialized), but I'm sure you're right...  the languages would come fairly quickly!  I still think it's nice to include the most common languages.

King:  I can't tell if your serious or just joking!  I'd guess that the average user of MC has 50+ GB of data storage available.  At 500 KB (thirty languages), that's a mere 0.001%.  Even accounting for file system inefficiencies, it's a ridiculously small amount.

Not only to think about the most important languages ,but  if the country can be a good "MC buyer"

First language on earth is spanish ,second chinese.
Now ,you cannot say that many people speak japanese.
But this people may buy more MC than all china and south america.
The same concerning coreen .
I do thing Europe can be a hudge market ,BUT.. they need to make a lot of languages versions in this case...:
proper english - german and all the northen countrys.
No need for a russian version because they use only cracks.

I do not know in your country ,but ,in France when you really cannot understand something or someone ,we say " to me it is hebrew'.

MC ,in plain english , to me ,many time 'is hebrew'..........
Beside it ,there is no need. Small country ,one computer for each member of the family== no large hardrive and no more than one on each one.

And people would not spend $50 on a jukebox when they can hack/crack all others jukebox on the market.

We are at the top of pirate production, with Russia....
