Discrepancy in file count totals [Solved]
« on: January 09, 2017, 06:46:22 am »

The Reporter feature tells me I have 7828 "total files", of which 7827 are "audio files" and 1 is "other files". What is this other file? I can't seem to locate it.

Could be a document file.  Or image or video.

But why doesn't it show up in my library? The two folders where I keep music files are both set up to auto-import all file types (everything is checked), and "Ignore special files" is unchecked in both cases. Is there a "hidden file" feature I am missing? This issue predates the Reporter feature. Going back to at least MC19, the file count at the bottom of Media Center is always off by a factor of one compared to the results that display after running auto-import.

I found another user (rjm) who noticed the same discrepancy way back in 2007 with Media Center 12. Here is his post from February 6, 2007:

"I noticed an oddity in MC12 a while ago but did not think it was important enough to report. My 'All' view tells me I have 99005 files in my library. When I run import the summary tells me I have one extra file (99006). When I close the summary I still have 99005 in my library."

Have any other users noticed this issue, and if so, have you figured out how to get the totals to match? It's a minor annoyance, but I would like to get to the bottom of it.

So the "hidden" file is an xml file named "ContentsDB". What is this?

more than likely it's a recovery data base file of some sort. either way it's a data base file hence the DB at the end.

So do all Media Center users have this file?

I don't think it's our file.  Try Google.

As far as I know, iTunes can create ContentsDB.xml files.

So after backing up my library (just in case), I deleted the "ContentsDB" file and it went away without any issues. Now my counts line up. Thank you very much to everyone for their help! I have been wondering about this for years!
