Very slow import (OS X)
« on: January 25, 2017, 01:19:51 am »

Hi all
while waiting for the material for my new Kaby Lake build, I have taken an old 2009 Mac Mini back into service as a streamer. Streaming works without issues, but the import of the files into the library is sometimes extremely slow.

My configuration:
Synology NAS (SMB3 turned on, Mac File System turned off)
Gigabit Ethernet
Mac Mini

When I import files ("run auto import in background" turned off), MC will import several thousand files with normal speed. All of a sudden it will slow down extremely and take up to two minutes to add a file. It has struck me that this happens with some of the large files (24/192kHz), other large files are added at normal speed. It does not occur with 16/44 files (at least not so that I see it).
It almost looks like for some files MC is reading the full file from the NAS before adding it.

I have unchecked "analyze audio for audio files " and "build thumbnails".

Any ideas what could be the issue here?

How many files are we talking about? What is the filesystem used by the NAS? HFS+? FAT32? NTFS? Have you tried directly connecting the NAS and seeing if it's faster then during import (to rule out the network)?

Hi Donkey

The library contains around 60'000 files.

In the meantime I have found out that simply waiting (for a long long time) will finally import the files. JRiver does not crash.
The Mac Mini had been connected with a 100Mbit/s connection, I have now moved it to a 1Gb/s connection. It still pauses during adding files, simply less long. The whole library no takes a few hours to import.

I noted that once the library is imported (and the files are known to JRiver), a rescan is very quick. So it seems to me that JRiver really wants to look into some of the files more closely than others and loads them from the NAS (completely or partially). No idea why it would need do something like that.

I can live with this behaviour for now.
I'll open a new thread for another problem I have.
