JRiver native dsd dacs
« on: January 27, 2017, 04:41:26 am »

Does anyone have experience with using jriver and native dsd dacs?
I have just purchased arcam  irdac 2. (Which support 64 and 128 dsd.
I have selected to play dsd 128 dsd native .
I have then selected dsd bitream.

Now I have not enabled dop,  because I don't want any pcm involved.
My dsds play fine.

Question...
Is my dac playing these dsds truly native??  Without any processing??
Thanx in advance.

Now I have not enabled dop,  because I don't want any pcm involved.

DoP does not involve PCM or any conversion to PCM. And it's required by some DACs to get DSD working, it seems.

The original idea for DoP was invented by dCS in 2011. It involves taking groups of 16 adjacent 1-bit  samples from a DSD stream and packing them into the lower 16 bits of a 24/176.4 data stream. Data from the other channel of the stereo pair is packed the same way. A specific marker code in the top 8 bits identifies the data stream as DoP, rather than PCM. The resulting DoP stream can be transmitted through existing 24/192-capable USB, AES, Dual AES or SPDIF interfaces to a DoP-compatible DAC, which reassembles the original stereo DSD data stream COMPLETELY UNCHANGED.

Thank you for your reply
But it I do not use dop and select 2x dsd in native format in the drop down, then select stream dsd.
Does this mean there is no processing done?

Meaning my dac is playing raw dsd?  Iam assuming that is what it is doing.
When I play 128 sacd my arcam USB driver tells me it's playing 5644800 hz
And jriver audio path shows:

Dsd 5.6mhz 2 ch source format dsf
(No changes are being made)

Is my my dac native???
Cannot find any more info on arcam irdac 2.
All arcam say is it can play 64 128

If you're going to DSP Studio > Output Format and selecting 2xDSD in DoP format (requires DSD capable DAC) under Output Encoding or any of the other DSD options there, it does go through a PCM conversion first. There's no DSD to DSD conversion possible without first going through PCM (e.g. DSD64 > PCM > DSD128). Basically avoid using any DSP Studio options and it'll be passed through natively.

The best way to avoid PCM conversion is to disable all checked options in DSP Studio, especially Output Format, enable DSD bitstreaming then enable DoP if your DAC supports or requires it. It should output native DSD without any conversion whatsoever.

Thank you.
Yes all dsp options disabled ,
No processing.
Just sending to the dac native. Not dop.

Thank you again guys. Much appreciated.
