Does someone know what amount of add. memory is required to run JRiver on a Linux virtual machine installed on  QNAP using a TS 253 pro 2GB if there are no parallel tasks to music playing (Hires)? Or is it sufficient?

As with many things in life it depends.

I would have thought that you'd want at least 2GB for the Linux VM. The BASS with its on board OS works too a default 2GB.

In my case (TS-653 Pro), I didn't muck around and loaded my unit with 2 sticks of 8GB RAM. By OEM advice this is not supported but my research told me it was a low risk. I set up a Linux VM with 4GB and its functional. MC is running separately via the package. My Linux plans are a back burner project, so I can't vouch for MC function on a VM though.

No (paper) reason (that I can see at this stage) why it won't work as a server though.

You're asking for trouble running a VM on a low powered machine and then expecting that VM to do a real time task.  Namely music playback.

Just my humble opinion.

For info, a review from the interweb grabbed at random:

It makes some positive comments.

Qnap's site on this capability:
