Can I use JRiver in offline mode?  Is there a way to use it without internet access (assuming once I validate the key)?

If not, how often does JRiver need to call home to validate itself?

Once it's licensed, you shouldn't need internet for anything.

First time you play a video MC will want to download some files (LAV, and madVR for RO+HQ) unless this download requirement has changed recently. After that it is fine unless a version update has a new version of LAV and/or madVR.

I also recall that when I did a audio file format conversion (I think I was creating some mp3s) there was another file download needed.

Before going offline you can do the following to have MC download components:
1 play a video using Red October Standard
2 play a video using Red October HQ
3 Encode a song to any filetypes you will want to encode to in the future
4 Play an mp3 (likely only needed if you are using Linux)
5 Create an access key if using media network

To use media network/client server without Internet access, I am pretty sure you need to use a local ip address (like 192.168.x.xx) rather than an access key. Pretty sure, the access key gets decoded by the JRiver server, not locally.

That's correct, but if the server can't be reached, MC uses the last known good address.

If the need is for audio, for 10 years I have enjoyed MC while motoring along (in my motorhome), running on a laptop on the dash, enjoying my entire music library. No Internet or other network access is available or needed.

When I'm back home I connect the laptop to my network, but just to do updates, backups, etc.
