Red October Standard & GPU/TV Colour Space
« on: April 24, 2017, 06:55:11 am »

Does Red October Standard prefer one of the following GPU(NVIDIA)/ TV (LG 4K OLED) configurations:

1. GPU: YCbCr 4:4:4;   8bit |  TV: YCbCr 4:4:4 (for LG 4K OLED black level low)  10 bit Display
1. GPU: RGB   (0-255); 8bit | TV: RGB FULL     (for LG 4K OLED black level high) 10 bit Display
3. GPU: RGB (16-235); 8bit | TV: RGB Limited  (for LG 4K OLED black level low)  10 bit Display

Assumption: LG OLED handles YCbCr 4:4:4 the same as  RGB Limited.

Thank you very much for your help.

Any PC output always prefers RGB mode. On a PC its also usually preferable to use "Full" RGB range if your TV accepts it.

I usually see most How-to's, Wikis, etc. recommend leaving the GPU at full range.  TVs will vary, depending on their capabilities, and how you hook them up but ideally, as recommended, the TV accepts full color range, and you can leave everything at full.  You might also want to poke around JRiver to see if you can set the color space in JRiver.  There are test patterns out there that should help you determine if anything wierd is going on with your color space.  look up the AVS 709 setup disc.

Thanks!

That was also my understanding that RGB (0-255) is preferred as for madVR, but there is many confusion about that topic in the Web.

I read that MadVR always converts to RGB (0-255) so you might as well use that.

madVR can convert to other, although the default in the RO settings is to use 0-255. However, your video driver has the final say. My TV (an older Vizio) uses 16-235 on the HDMI inputs and 0-255 on the VGA input. Since I use the HDMI input I have to specify in the nVidia control panel to output limited RGB so that the color space is correct. For whatever reason this value is reset each time I upgrade my video driver so it is always something I have to be aware of, although I can usually tell right away when I've forgotten to correct the setting since dark scenes will be very difficult to watch.

Unless I'm mistaken MadVR will ALWAYS convert to 0-255 for processing. Yes it can be configured to output 16-235 this will NOT prevent a conversion to 0-255 first.
