You just need to tag them.  Enter the year for each one.

You might post a screen shot showing what you see.  Or be a bit more descriptive.  I think you can get what you want, probably as Jim said, but it's hard to be sure without more info.

Good luck.

this is what I've come up with. If I click on "grateful dead' in the artist column i then see all the live shows in the album column.

If i highlight all the shows from 1985, click tag, and change the artist name to Grateful Dead 1985. I do that to all the years, and I get uner albums, grateful dead 1977, grateful dead 1978, and so on... screen shot to follow.

is this my only method?

You need to add the year to the Year tag, not to the album name. Each tag field should only contain the information it refers to. It may be necessary for you to right click the tag window and select "show all tags" for the year tag to display and be editable.

Filling in the year tag still does not separate them byt year. They are in order by year and day, but its still one whole list.

also, still cant figure out screenshot.

You need to fill out the Date (which is the Year) tag - it's empty in that screenshot.

thank you! just the year or the actual date of the show? i.e. and how about the format? 1986 or 03-13-86 or 86-03-13?

thanks again, I have never been on a forum where others are so responsive, and quick!

Personally, I just add the year. But I'm sure you could do the full date, haven't tried. Give it a go (a modified second example 03-13-1986 would likely work best, no?) and see if it works! :)

You seem to already have the full date included in the Album field.  So you have the information you want.  Are you wanting to add a Year Pane to your Panes list up top?  So you can click on Grateful Dead and then see a list of years?  Then click on a year and see albums?

Or do you have something else in mind?

It's entirely possible that you could populate the Date field automatically by reading the value from the Album field.  It might take a bit of messing around with the Expression Language to make it work, but I think it's feasible, at least for those albums where you already have YY-MM-DD at the front of the Album field.  I could possibly help develop the expression to do this if that would help you get the results you want.

I've done something very similar for live shows.  I added some auto import rules that find the date of a show and add it to the "Season" field.  I also grab the microphone source from the directory name (assuming the directories are normally named: xxx2017-05-01.dpa4028.flac##).  That goes into a field I created called Source.

I used the Season tag so that I could use the concert posters as coverart, but not have it embedded in thousands of files.  I manually updated the Year (in my case I named it "tour"), into the Series tag.  That lets me put the marketing image for the tour as the coverart.  This part makes it more manual, just using the year would have been easier.

In the library views list, I then made one that went Artist > Series > Season > Source > File Type (flac16 vs flac24).  I think it worked out fairly well for my use.  I'm attaching a bunch of pictures that might help (splitting into two posts because of the screenshots).

Harry,

I'm pretty sure I have a working expression to extract the Date from your Album titles.  Give this a try on an album or two and see how it works:

Open the Tagging Pane on the left with Edit > Tag
Highlight one album worth of files.
Find the Date Tag.  If you don't see it, use the Gear pulldown menu to show all tags, then go find it.
In the Date field, paste in this expression:
Code: [Select]
=left([Album],8)
The Date for that album should now be correct.  If that works, highlight some more albums and do the same thing again.  If they are all formatted in the same way, you can highlight all of your Dead albums and do the Date setting all at once.  Very little work.

Once that's done, you can easily add a Year pane to your Panes view.  I just tested it and it seems to work great.

Good luck,

Brian.

One note on date format. YYYY-MM-DD is best. That way, everything sorts properly.

In MC, the date field will express the date as MM/DD/YYYY, but if you use YYYY-MM-DD in album naming, then the sorting order will be way more useful. I use this format for album naming...

YYYY-MM-DD (two letter code for country of show) City two letter state - Venue

For example:

1970-02-11 (US) New York NY - Fillmore East

That structure will allow you to parse the info any which way you might need to later on if there's a reason to do so.

I have a very similar methodology that includes a multitude of Grateful Dead Shows.  In the album field, I use date, venue, city as follows:

1991/09/10 Madison Square Garden, New York, NY

This has worked well for me.  Good luck in getting your library the way you want.

I'd recommend keeping the pertinent data in separate fields and creating a custom field to combine them. This allows much greater flexibility.

FWIW, I didn't think to add that I also populate the other fields which, to me, gives you the best of both worlds.
