Windows 10 Creators Update Troubles
« on: May 11, 2017, 11:57:21 pm »

MC22 is no longer working correctly after installing the Windows 10 Creators update.
1. Scheduled TV programs are not being recorded.
2. Media Server seems to get unloaded and/or stops running at random. The taskbar icon is still there but it's unresponsive.
3. If I watch a program for an hour or more Windows Start Menu and Universal Apps stop working.
4. Sometimes if a program is being recorded and the computer goes into sleep mode, the entire system becomes unresponsive and I have to do a hard shutdown.
5. Sometimes when I start MC22 it says the program is in trial mode and tells me I need to buy a license, which of course I already have and is usually recognized.

Make sure to re-install MC after a big Windows update like this. I'm not aware of any issues caused by it otherwise.

This is a (known) Windows 10 issue. Fortunately a user provided a workaround for it: http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php/topic,106925.0.html

Do I need to uninstall it first? Do I have to backup my setting or TV recording rules first? What about TV tuner and program guide information? I remember it was a total nightmare to get my channels working because most of the channel numbers for my zipcode were wrong, and as a result the guide showed the wrong program information or nothing at all for many of my local stations. Will this whole station setup and program guide reconfiguration process have to be done again if I reinstall MC?

Do a library backup: https://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Library_Backup

Then uninstall (if it asks during uninstalling, remove all settings, etc.). Then after reinstalling restore the backup and see if it works then.

Well, I uninstalled MC 22 and in the process discovered that MC 21 was still installed; at least it was showing as being installed in the Windows Apps list.

When you install an update, from 21 to 22 for example, shouldn't the installed be smart enough to uninstall the previous version? Or at least tell you that you have to uninstall it manually? I can't think of any other program that I've dealt with in the last decade which doesn't have this basic functionality built in. Nor did any of the upgrade instructions on the JRiver website mention that I had to uninstall the old program first, or backup my settings. Nor did the email I got when I bought the upgrade.

So now I have MC22 reinstalled, but the program guide problem that I was dreading has returned. I've spent the last 2 hours trying to get my channel listings and TV tuner and program guide to match-up and work but it doesn't. Every time I think I have it right the MC2XML program pops up and insists on rescanning everything, and invariably messes it all up again. I try to cancel it by closing the dialog boxes but it keeps coming back.

Many of my channels are now blank, showing no programs, but I don't know how to update the listings without a complete channel rescan, which as I said above, messes up most of my channels.

I tried again after taking a break and it appears that I now have the program guide working.

Old major versions stay installed, which make you able to switch back if the new one isn't working as it should. Handy if you are an early adopter. I consider this a feature, not a bug. Old versions do not interfere with new ones. I have had mc17, 18, 19, and 20 installed simultaneously without any issues.

MC 22 has been working without any problems for 10 days now. That's a relief! Thanks for your help and advice.

I haven't tried putting the computer to sleep during a recording to see if that still locks up Windows completely. If it does I'll report back.
