Ugly fonts
« on: May 14, 2017, 01:45:11 pm »

Hi,

I'm really really happy with JRiver Media Center 22 on my Windows PC. I tried this week-end a Mac with Sierra, and naturally I installed my prefered audio player, JRiver mediacenter 22. Audio is really nice, but I have a BIG problem with fonts.
Why are they so ugly in JRiver !!! I know the main goal of the software is not to be exposed in museum, but here it's really ugly. I'm not ready to use it with such fonts.
My screen is not retina, what's the best font to use ? I'm really sad !

Regards

Helvetica seems very smoothly rendered on my computer.  My Mac *does* have a Retina display though.

Did you try changing the font under Tools > Options > Tree and View ?

Yeah, fonts need some antialiasing, IMO. I'm holding back my feature request on this for MC23 (to have smooth Retina Mode-esk looking fonts without enabling Retina Mode).

I believe Hendrik is aware of the jaggy-ish fonts on both Mac and Linux. Enabling Retina Mode on Mac does help with the few skins that support it, but skins with gradients it messes them up and I don't know how to fix that. :P

Yes I changed fonts from there.
Helvetica 13 is acceptable but not as smooth as on Windows. It's strange for a mac :D

Ok, wow.  I had forgotten that MC's fonts on a non-retina system were a little jaggy.  I just turned off Retina mode to test.  Yes, the fonts definitely are jaggy/low res.  They aren't horrible.  Just not sharp and smooth.  When you turn on Retina mode, you can definitely see the difference.  On my older 15" Mac without Retina I hardly noticed until someone pointed it out.  Then I went back to not really noticing.  But on my larger screen, it's far more obvious.
