except that is where my music library is and my DAC.  never had a problem with the same connections just a month ago or so. perhaps have the software skip worrying about hard disks or at least the ones your library is hosted on.

I don't know if that's the issue, just trying to see if it is as a clue to the problem.
You wouldn't need to disconnect anything except the drive.
Start MC with the drive disconnected.
Choose a few files on the internal hard drive to play and see if you can duplicate the issue.

dfortney:
disconnected the hard disk and played some songs locally and it worked.  reconnected the hard drive and it worked.  not sure what this proves but it will probably fail again later.  sounds like you need to adjust how it handles devices when JRemote connects.

jmrdc:
How much HD space do you have on the drive JR is connected?  I was having the same problems, but I bought a new HD with 1TB - so far (three hours of no skipping), I am convinced this worked better than anything else.  Running Sierra on a MacPro.

jmrdc:
Sorry, 1TB more than I had before.
