JRiver Media Center 23.0.10 for Debian Beta
« on: June 22, 2017, 11:58:06 am »

This is the latest BETA version of MC23 for Linux.  Please post bugs here.  Please start a new thread for anything requiring discussion.  Non-bug posts will be deleted.

Download:
i386      http://files.jriver.com/mediacenter/test/MediaCenter-23.0.10.deb
amd64  http://files.jriver.com/mediacenter/test/MediaCenter-23.0.10-amd64.deb
arm      http://files.jriver.com/mediacenter/test/MediaCenter-23.0.10-armhf.deb

Also in the BETA repo.

23.0.10 (6/22/2017)

1. NEW: First builds of MC23 for Linux.
2. Changed: Re-Write linux internet reader to streamline seeking on reading of files. This is a big change and will make a difference in the behavior of MC when playing files over the network and when used as DLNA renderer, especially on slow devices. Report regressions please.
3. NEW: The "Radio" feature, SSL support and others from the main build tree.

should this have picked up existing MC22 settings on installation? (it didn't)

Picking up settings on Linux may be a bit more difficult that it is on Windows. That said, the backup/restore of settings worked perfectly - I've upgraded both my Arch Linux and Linux Mint installs. :D

Once the MC23 repos are created, and MC23 is pushed to the latest repo, I'll port over the tutorials. ;)

Until then, so far, so good.

why would it be trickier?

it seems like it picked up some settings (e.g. was aware of the server) but not others

Actually, thinking about it more it might just be the automatic settings import hasn't been implemented on Linux yet.

Yes, that is the case. It will pick up the settings however if you just restore from the last MC22 library backup and leave the default checkbox for restoring settings enabled.

so the approach, for an mc instance connected to a library server, is as follows;

- switch MC22 to a local library, take a backup
- install MC23
- restore settings only from the MC22 backup
- connect MC23 to the library server

right?

I found and added the MC23 latest repo. However, there isn't a beta or stable repo yet. I'm assuming the build posted above is posted to the MC22 beta repo instead to a MC23 beta repo?

The other question is... are you guys going to jump to Debian Stretch at some point (at least for 64-bit)? :D

When Stretch is released as stable the 64 bit build will be upgraded to stretch and most likely the 32 bit arm and i386 builds will be updated to jessie.

The QPKG of MC23 hasn't been released yet. I'm still testing it.

It has been released as stable. ;)

One of my concerns is that stretch and wheezy are rather far apart, and as long as x86_32 and ARM still target wheezy, making that gap even larger might result in inconsistencies at best, issues at worst.
Of course my solution to that would be upgrading those two to jessie at least, but I know Bob likes to keep the old things alive. :)

I'm hoping for one day to use a full C++11 compiler for all Linux builds, so I can start using fancy things (4.7 in wheezy is too old, 4.9 or 5+ would be nice - jessie is on 4.9 and stretch on 6). ;)

Looking at what Bob said above, looks like that's indeed the plan. :D

But yeah, Stretch went stable 10 days ago, but I've yet to try it out.

EDIT: YAY, there's a MC23 beta repo now! :)

The only reason I tend to build on the old platforms is that it makes it more likely that MC will run on other distros and since we don't depend on a lot of system libs there isn't a lot to be gained by using a newer distro.

At some point though we need to assume those users with older distros will upgrade their OS as well.

Working great here on Fedora 25. Users can download the beta file in the OP to the SOURCES directory autogenerated from the install_MC_fedora.sh script and then run the script per usual:

Code: [Select]
./install_MC_fedora.sh 23.0.10
Once the Debian releases are out of beta I will create a new post in the MC23 for Linux forum. I made the script MC version agnostic over the past few months so it won't need to be altered.

For upgrades you will need to restore a MC22 library backup and then restore your license.

Yes
FWIW this method did not carry forward the network key for the instance so I had to register it afresh and then go and update jremote

I have see that before as well. Not sure what the issue is but since it's easy to get a new key it's been more of an annoyance than anything else.
Will take a look at it as time allows.

It works but I'm inclined to wait to post it until a couple of issues in the main build get corrected first.
