can the MC version ons Raspberry Pi be used as DLNA server or only as a renderer/controller ?

Yes. All 3. The problem is limited storage space. I'm using a 256GB microSD card and all my music fits on it.
A USB drive would normally be a solution, but I don't think it works well enough yet.

I'm using a 1TB bus powered USB drive with my Pi3 and I think it works just fine. The only down side is about a 6 or 7 second pause in spinning up the drive if media center has been inactive for more than 1 hour. I hardly even notice it.
