Amazon Prime broken in MC23, still OK in MC21
« on: June 26, 2017, 02:16:41 pm »

I installed MC 23 along side MC 21.  Amazon Prime works in MC21 but I get the dratted - "Your web browser is missing a digital rights component. Go to chrome://components and under WidevineCdm, click Check for update" error in MC 23.  I checked chrome:\\components. No "WidevineCmd" but there is a "Widevine Content Decryption Module - Version: 1.4.8.970"  I click "Update" I see "Status - Component not updated."  It appears to be the latest available version.
Any ideas???
Thanks,
Lou

Okay, first off MC doesn't use Chrome that's installed on a PC, instead it uses CEF (Chromium Embedded Framework). I'm not sure if you can even get to chrome://components within MC when using the Chromium engine, I've never tried. However it sounds to be either a) the Widevine CDM didn't download in MC23 or b) CEF might be a few Chromium versions out-of-date (which needs to be updated occasionally to keep Widevine working) and needs to be updated.

The version of Widevine in Chrome 59 stable right now is 1.4.8.984.

CEF disabled the ability to automatically piggy-back on Chromes Widevine module for licensing reasons and now require you to manually license, obtain and install Widevine. We're currently not doing that, and I'm not sure if or when we will.
So basically it will likely only work on installs where the module is already downloaded.

Wow, sounds expensive. =\

Actually Google doesn't ask any licensing fees for Widevine, however there is a lot of red tape involved, since you have to guarantee security and whatnot. DRM is just annoying.

Thanks for the replies.  I got MC 21 successfully using Prime via an install of the Widevine component in Chrome (yes, the Chrome browser as memory serves) lo those many years ago.  I expected/hoped if it worked in one MC version it would work in all. I saw some rigamarole when I checked out the Google/Widevine/DRM site. These are the kind of time-sink issues that keep my upgrades as far apart as possible.  So at least for now, I can not use Prime on MC23.

On a side note, MC23 playback from any source is unacceptably jittery in fast motion sequences whereas MC21 is smooth.  The color palate seems subtly different when I AB compare the same content in MC21 vs MC23. I was going to start another thread on this but as it now appears I will be remaining on MC21 for a bit, perhaps not.

I have this problem too. There comes a message, that it has problems with the DRM stuff. I tried to install chormium 32 bit and copied the widevine stuff into the Plugins/chromium folder in JRiver. I also copied it to the Local\CEF\User Data\WidevineCDM (Had to create the folder manually). Is there no way of playing DRM encrypted conent in Theater View?

It'll only work in the module was already downloaded, prior to CEF discontinuing the use of an already installed Chrome Widevine CDM.

Otherwise, no, it's likely broken. Read Hendrik's reply above closely. :)
