converting regular cds to 5,1 ?
« on: July 04, 2003, 11:35:02 pm »

A friend asked me to convert some regular cds to WMA 9 lossless 5,1

What the resuls maybe ? Any idea?

In fact the result would be a kind of fake 5,1

If as bad than the fake stereo lps years ago  , not a good idea to make such a convertion.

Any opinions really welcome.

I do not have a 5,1 system.

I need to convert few cds ,to burn them on a data cd and to go to my friend's place to listen to it.

So ,if you tell me it is a very bad idea ,i may save quitte a lot of time.................

I don't think it is poible really as you don't have access to the separate channels to be able to allocate them to the rear speakers.  I would say it would probablly be a waste of time...

I use DBpowerAmp to rip and covert
Nothing to do with the fact if MC good or not.
I use this program since years ,much before i meet MJ7.

The other day ,this friend saw that there is option to rip/convert to WMA9 lossless 5,1.

My opinion is that you use it if you want to rip a 5,1 audio to lossless WMA 9.
Not to get a kind of 5,1.

if the audio source is already 5.1 then that should work fine.  I misunderstood.  I thought you wanted to convert a standard stere track into 5.1...

Thats not really possible then.  You could use something like Sonic Foundry Acid Pro 4.0 to duplicate the left and right channeles in the rear speakers and merge them for the rear centre but it wouldn't be truly 5.1  The only way you could do that would be to remaster the CD from the Source...

What do you use your Extigy for?

I know very little about all of the technology involved but it would seem to me that unless you had a 5.1 CD burner, then all you could do would be to rip a standard CD through a decoder (software or hardware) into 6 tracks on the hard drive.  As you would need a decoder to even play that file, you might as well rip to stereo and let that play through the Extigy.

Carolus 8

It is not me .
To this day i'am not sure if stereo is a good thing... so 5,1 .....

A friend saw that in PowerAMp converter  there is convert to WMA 9 lossless 5,1.

So he wanted me to rip his cds and burn it in data WMA9 lossless 5,1.

But ,this do means that with the WMA format ,you can rip 5,1 cds to your drive.

Do not know if you need a special cdr.
But ,having a DVD-cdroom ,look like it may work.

Anyway ,i really do not care about it.

Still VERY happy with my Extigy.

Just the headphones plug does not play that loud

hey Z,

Just explain to the guy that CD's are only stereo and it's impossible to make it sound better than the original.

What he needs to do isjust get a dolby II system where it artificially makes the 5.1 surround :)
