i don't think these should be shown as both an audio and video file.  I've unchecked .mp4 from the audio section dozens of times over the years, but MC keeps just re-checking .mp4 under audio every time I go to manually import anything.  I realize it really doesn't matter that much, since i don't usually have any .mp4 files when I import; but it just seems 'wrong' to list one file type under 2 places, then to force re-checking the file every time after I've unchecked it from the audio section.

It is used as both inconsistently. Thats not something we can control, unfortunately.
