Cheap disk space.  200 gig for $130.

AWESOME   ;D
THANK YOU !!
Too good to pass up even if I can't really afford it . . .     :-/

Oh well, ya gotta have music!
And ya gotta have a back-up, yup. Sure do!
. . . Thought I had lost 15,000 files the other day . . .   when I thought of all the time and work spent on my collection it scared me enough to say: "guess no new dress & shoes this month"    :'(

So this was a great deal at a perfect time . . . a payday BEFORE the bills get here  ::)
Listening to RadioParadise.com on MC9, of course  ;)

Cool... I just ordered 2. I'm going to use them in a mirrored RAID array. It's about time I have some level of backup protection.

Keep in mind that you will most likely need an EIDE interface card that supports drives larger than 138 gig, even with XP.

And I suggest you don't make the entire drive one huge partition.  I've read that scandisk and defrag may not work right on partitions larger than 138 gig.

Sometimes the larger drives are packaged with the needed EIDE card.  WesternDigital drive come with the card.

Isn't it for 1 rebate per 1 household?  Just thought.

Good deal, but I was under the impression that most drives with 8MB caches came with a 3 year warranty instead of the 1 year warranty on this drive. So the price and shorter warranty make me slightly suspicious... but so do a lot of things  ;)

I already have all the necessary hardware. And I never use Scandisk or Defrag. I never really trusted Scandisk after it ran a surface scan on a floppy disk I had driven a pencil through and it reported no errors!

And this kit comes with the card anyway.

Yeah, it is. That's why I had my girlfriend order the second one and have it shipped to her parent's house. :)

I do not know in the US ,but here ,reduce the warranty time is one of the ways to sell cheap .
Beside it ,200 gig  is "antique"

There is 250 and a 320 out now.
They need to clean shelves

Damnit. :P

Ah, well... too late to worry about it now. Plus I'm not sure how I feel about Western Digital anymore. I've been hearing some really bad reports about the quality control. They may have taken care of all that, though.

Of course, a couple of years ago, you couldn't have paid me enough to put a Maxtor drive in my system. And now they have quite a good reputation for reliability. Go figure.

Hehehe.  I already bought 4 200G drives last month (only 1 w/ rebate, 3 w/o rebate.  Graduate season is not good for reliable rebate.), so I should not need anymore.  But, I may buy one more.  I just cannot resist their cheap price!

The Maxtor L01P200 has a 1-year warranty; the comparable Western Digital drive, the WD2000JB, has a 3-year warranty.  Short warranties make me nervous!

There was a news release not too long ago about a spate of bad parts, which affected several drive manufacturers.  I think WD was excluded from that (dumb luck, no doubt).

Of course what it boils down to is that any drive you get, from any manufacturer, could die on you.  It's happened to me with IBM drives, Maxtor drives, and (in a different way) Western Digital drives.  Roll the dice!   :P

I made the mistake of letting Dell get hold of my mailing address a couple years ago.  I could have wallpapered my entire house with all the crap they've sent me since then.  I think I've gotten two new catalogs from them this week alone.

What is going on with HD prices?  Suddenly they're rebating like they're going out of business.  Are there new models coming that are going to drive down prices and they're cleaning house?

Not that I'm complaining! ;)

Not sure but I ordered that WD 200 gig from Dell.  Will end up costing $114!  I also get that spam mail from Dell, by the way.  I just throw away those magazines.  It's not that big a problem!  I don't get spam email from them and we've ordered many computers, etc. from Dell.

It becomes a problem when 300 other companies do the same thing!   :D

Don't throw away those Dell catalogs without looking for discount coupon codes.  Recently one of mine had a 15% off stackable code listed on it.  I was able to order a Palm for 30% off and free shipping.
