I am trying to rip a DVD using Handbrake on my iMac IOS 10.11.6 and am having trouble.  When it is "done" I trying playing it back and it is all distorted.  I am not sure if I am doing something wrong.  I would appreciate any help.  I have attached a screenshot of what it looks like when I try playing it back.  Thanks

Can you play that same file with VLC or Quicktime Player or another video player?

My *guess* is that Handbrake didn't rip the disc correctly.  You might try another DVD or perhaps try using MakeMKV.  MakeMKV is faster than HandBrake and does not remove quality like Handbrake does.  But of course, the resulting files are way larger.

I have tried playing back with VLC and Real Player as well as itunes, and it is the same result.  hmmm I can try MakeMKV.  because it is larger files and the ultimate goal is to be able to play it on my iphone, can I convert MKV files, do you know?

Don't think HandBrake deals with DVD copy protection (which is what I'm guessing is the problem here), hence the MakeMKV recommendation which does.

As far as I know you can playback MKV on iOS (iPhones, iPads, etc.) with VLC for iOS.

When I used to use Handbrake, a million years ago (really more like 2), it definitely decrypted the DVDs I ripped with it.  I didn't use any extra software.  It "just worked".  I hated the interface, the effort I put into tuning it's parameters, and ultimately the resulting video.  But it *did* work and did produce useable video files.  I'm not sure why it's not working for the OP.

If it were me, I'd try another DVD or two and see what happens.  Or like I said, try MakeMVK.  But if the OP is just going to convert to another format after ripping with MakeMKV, it might be a bit of wasted effort.  <shrug>

I use MakeMKV to rip Blu-ray disk to mkv file. Then I use HandBrake to compress the file.

The current version of HandBrake doesn't do decryption. Here is a quote from the documentation, under the heading About HandBrake: "HandBrake also does not defeat or circumvent copy protection of any kind. It does not work with video files employing Digital Rights Management (DRM).

I use Windows. The Windows version of HandBrake recently had a major UI upgrade making it a lot easier to use.

WOW, that's a surprise!  I just did a quick web search and couldn't find when or why that feature was removed.  I wonder why that happened.

Certainly explains the OP's issue!  Nice job Don.
