Renaming Lighting
« on: July 29, 2017, 02:55:58 pm »

Great day Brad,

Bringing back up this idea which i've read somewere before 8)

Wouldn't it make sense to rename the 'Lighting' Tab - Theater View ?

As the Z-Wave possibilities are much wider then just controlling lighting equipment.
Maybe something like (Home) Automatisation, Home Control(s), Z-Wave Control(s) or even "IoT".
Or having at least the ability to custom rename the tab under Theater View.

Thanks in advance !

I've been thinking about this, too.  Lighting worked when it was just lighting.

Automation -- sounds a little geeky, might work

IoT -- nice and short, may not mean anything to some

Domotique -- French term for automation, sounds nice

Gear

Switches

I'd love to have a name that isn't too nerdy.  Home?

"Automation" isn't too geeky.

"Home Automation" might be better, but is long.

"Home Control" is shorter.

Don't use foreign words, or if you do, include them in the translation lists.

While quirky naming is a trade mark of MC, and usually fun, people need to know what the functions do, without having to search the forums and then remember that, oh yeah, Gebunzcle sets the audio stream input to the last known source. I think your "Play Doctor" poll showed that was a problem. I dare you to run a poll on "Doctor Who" functionality. ;)

Device Control.

Simple and to the point. If I see device control, I would think I could control my devices with it.

I'd like to find a one word noun if possible.

Things?  (as in Internet of Things).

Think how your spouse or kids might see it.

That is a pretty big ask Jim.

Home Control, Home Automation, and Smart Home/House seem to be the dominant terms that carry meaning for most people. So one of those, or a variation on them, is probably the logical answer.

Of course, if you really want a single noun name, and with some meaning, then "Domotics" is the correct term. Maybe people will wonder what that is and look it up.

To save you a little time, it is a contraction of the term "Domestic Robotics", and Google searches mostly redirect to "Home Automation". http://www.yourdictionary.com/domotics

Thanks.  Another requirement is that it work for an office or shop setting as well, so "home" is a small disadvantage.

Still thinking.

Is anyone really going to be using MC Theatre View in an office or shop environment? It is good to aim high with penetration into many markets, but if any content was played in those environments there are going to be licensing issues, in which case I would expect them to be using another solution which tracks media played and generates royalty reports.

Anyway, I think you may be down to making up a word.

Facotics = "Facilities Robotics"
Facmation = "Facilities Automation", Facimation, Facilmation?
Inframation = "Infrastructure Automation"
Infraotics = "Infrastructure Robotics"
Spacotics = "Space Robotics"

Just throw a bunch of words, like Facilities, Infrastructure, Space, Provision, Equipment, Building, Robotics, Automation, Control, etc. into a blender and see what falls out.  8)

It's not just Theater View.  That's where you can find it in MC.

It's also in Panel and could be in other places.  It's a big set of switches.

I would rather not be limited to the home.

Control or Controls isn't bad.

Thanks for thinking about this.

Hi all,

'Control(s)' as alternative naming to 'Lighting' might be confusing to some people, or not ?
As someone could see it at first instance as related to MC's own control as in settings, don't you think ?

In my opinion if should be more linked to it's purpose: Home Control(s), Domotics, 'Z-Waving', Casa Master or even to continue MC's original naming: 'Doctor Casa'  ;D ;D ;D

Brainstorming ...

I'd like to find a one word noun if possible.

Apple has Siri. Amazon has Alexa. Someday MC will use voice control, so why not "James"?

How about just calling it Power?

Thanks Jim,

Would the renaming of the 'Lighting' tab into 'Power' not be confusing ?
I could think of non-daily users of MC to imagine this is actually the power button of MC or even of the TV set.
Same could be the case when going the 'Control' or ' Controls' route, my guess.

Terms like HomeControl, Domotronics, Domotics, DomoControl are pretty much covering the purpose, i'm thinking.

Thanks for keeping this renaming request into mind :-)

I appreciate your help.

Your list is good.  I've liked Domotics since I first heard the term.  Domo might work.  I think it also means thank you very much in Japanese.

Apple, in their infinite journey to mind numbing simplicity, calls their app Home and their stuff HomeKit.  We also have Google Home, which probably annoys Apple.

Engen is also a possibility.

I think you should rename it "Puter".
It's an especially good name to use with voice controls.
"Hey Puter, turn on the lights"

I like Domotics too.

How about MajorDomo?

DomoJoy: That way JRiver can have an MC and a DJ to make the party rock.
