Freezing and then Buffering
« on: July 02, 2003, 10:43:53 pm »

I cannot get MC9 to play at all without freezing on the first song it plays. It stops between 20-50 seconds after starting playing a list and freezes as if the pause button was pressed. I can select another song when this happens and MC9 tries to play it but displays a "buffering' status and gets stuck there. I have left it for up to 10 minutes with it still stuck in 'buffering' state.

I have a collection of 60,000 songs that hasn't had this problem before. I have erased my entire library and reloaded it. I have update the library. I have defragged the disk drives and have rebooted countless times. Nothing seems to change this behavior.

This has not happened prior to a few days ago.
I have no other software of note running as this is on my media server so it is the only real application.
I am not doing anything else on the system at all when this happens. It doesn't matter what song is selected, they all do it.
All 4 disk drives are local (no network drives).
I don't have auto resize columns selected.

Any suggestions as to the cause and, more importantly, the cure?

I get this behaviour whenever my modem is dialing.  Do you connect via modem?

When you first access MC is it on a page that requires internet access like Artist Info or maybe it's checking for updates? Do you have your modem set to connect automatically?

Just a thought.

I have DSL always on Internet service so that wouldn't be the problem here. I have read about others having odd pausing problems but not the buffering issue I seem to be having.

I tested other client players against the database since I last posted and they work no problem so it doesn't appear to be my server, just MC9.

DV8,

I have had that problem before, and it seemed to occur like every other build, as if something fundamental had changed with every other build, although I don't know what.  I'm not having it now, but it did seem to occur only when I used ASIO (using M-Audio Revolution and the M-Audio ASIO drivers).  Sometimes a reboot would clear it up, but sometimes not.  I don't know that answer and I'm sorry, but you might also try this.

First, update to Win2K Service Pack 4.
Next, go into Control Panel>Sounds and Audio Devices>Hardware (tab) and select your soundcard.  Click the "Properties" button.  In the "Properties" window that pops up, click the "Properties" tab, then expand the "Audio Devices" node.  Select your sound card, then click the "properties" button near the bottom. Check the "Do not map through this device" checkbox so that it is checked.  I read somewhere that that helps, and I did it and coincidentally haven't had any more problems (but I also stopped using ASIO too). Maybe that might help.
