Hi,

I am running MC22 on a MacBook Pro, Sierra 10.12.6

I ran across some strange behavior today and both Apple and I think it may be a couple of bugs.  But before I go that route, I would appreciate if someone can send me instructions for doing a full/complete uninstall - including all hidden & system files so I can get a perfectly clean re-install.

I have several issues:
1)   Volume control does not work
2)   Skin arbitrarily reverts to default on opening application (not every time)
3)   Apple's typical red-yellow-green "dots" in the upper left-hand corner do not appear
4)   Most strange is that Library Backups mysteriously disappear with no trace (not in trash) when I store them in a specific folder (reproducible), then close and reopen MC22.

I hope a clean re-install will fix some or all of these.

Thank you very much,
Susie Melo

Susie I needed to do a reinstall on my Power Book. Here's what I did that worked:

  * Deleted the "/Applications/Media Center 22"
  * Deleted the folder under "/Users/[myusername]/Library/Application Support",
  * Reinstalled MC 22.0.108,

Hi Jim,

Thank you for responding.  Can you or anyone else confirm if I should delete the entire JRiver folder under Application Support (i.e. /Users/susiemelo/Library/Application Support/JRiver/...) ?   Do you know if there are any other hidden system files that need to be deleted??

Thank you,
Susie

  • Long cold Winter...

This kinda sounds to me you were running the Media Center 23 app without first opening the .dmg file, then dragging the Media Center 23 app into the Applications folder, then opening it from there.

Susie, I deleted the entire folder. MC will recreate it on install.

Reinstall efforts prior to deleting that folder had no impact.

I agree with Awesome Donkey.  It sounds like you are NOT running MC from the Applications folder, but rather using it from INSIDE the mounted DMG file.  You should probably confirm that.

If you go ahead with your plan to nuke the installation, I would save a library backup first.  That way you have the option to restore your library and/or settings.

Hello Awsome Donkey & Brian,

Thank you for chiming in....  I am running MC22 and yes I did something strange initially because MC22 didn't install like other apps and, being a MAC newbie, it wasn't obvious what to do when when the MC22 icon and Applications Folder.   After 2-3 times clicking on the .dmg file I eventually went to Finder, saw MC22 icon next to Application Folder listed under "Devices".  I dragged the MC22 icon to the applications folder in the side bar (per Apple instructions) and deleted the other applications folder under "Devices", then ejected MC22 under devices.

Now dozens of .jmd files, .xml files & the Cache folder are in the folder I specified for my Library Backups, so whenever MC22 does a backup the file ends up comingled with the .jmd files and then permanently disappears when I close/open MC22.   I've tried deleting all of these files and renaming the folder, no luck.   Probably not a good idea.

Brian -- How do I check if I'm running INSIDE the mounted DMG file??

Wouldn't it just be better and easier to to attempt a FULL uninstall to make sure I get a clean install?   I'd rather start fresh if possible.  Then I will install MC23.  Unless you recommend otherwise.

I already have a good Backup saved.   Do you have any suggestions how to do a "complete" uninstall - or any other suggestions??

Thanks a million!!

That's pretty confusing.  Words are difficult to use to describe complex visual interfaces, so I understand it's not so easy to describe this stuff.  Starting fresh, with a known procedure sounds like the best idea to me.

That means that JRiver's "library" is in that folder too.  In this context "library" means "the database".  Those JMD files are JRiver's internal database that it uses to track every file that you add to it and all of it's attributes (like artist, album, track #, etc).

I'm guessing that somehow, you have told MC to put it's library files in that folder.  You might have done that by using File > Library > Library Manager > Add Library   Or maybe something else caused it.  Either way, it's definitely not what you want.

Close MC.  Now go to Applications and look for "Media Center 22".  It should show up as an white circular icon with a blue "play head" triangle in the middle.  If you look at the "Get Info" screen, it should show that it is an application.  If it shows that it is a DMG file, then that's not what you want.

Sounds good to me.

OK good.  Let's nuke it.  Couch has the right idea.  Delete the JRiver folder from underneath /Users/Your User/Library/Application Support/  .  That should remove JRiver's backups, it's library files, all the settings, etc.  Also remove any Media Center 22 files from /Applications.  You might also delete any downloaded MC22 DMG files (that you installed from).  Just to clean up and start with a fresh configuration so you won't wonder which file is which.

Once you have no trace left, then go download MC22 if you'd like.  I'd just start with MC23 personally, but MC22 is fine and should work great.

Once you've downloaded the MC2X DMG, open it.  You should see a window with an MC2X icon (the app) and a shortcut to Applications.  Drag the app into the shortcut and release.  It should copy itself to Applications, which will take several seconds.

Once it's copied, close the window the the DMG opened.  Go to Finder and EJECT the DMG file.  Now go to Applications and see that MC2X is there, ready to be run.  Run it, and it should start fresh.

From there you can set settings, import your library backup, etc.

Good luck!

Brian.

THANK YOU BRIAN!!!!  AND EVERYONE ELSE!!!

I think it's all good now.  Just a tough learning curve on the Mac and all the new apps  8)

Also, please tell me if I am posting correctly/incorrectly as this is a new way of communication for me.  Just getting used to forums and most are not as responsive.

I will keep you posted if the problem re-occurs.  I love a clean slate!

Thanks a million!

Good job Susie! Glad to have helped. These two, Brian and Awesome Donkey, in particular a super helpful.

I'm more comfortable on a PC myself but need to have a Mac for work. I learned something new today too;  I had no idea you could run stuff from a .dmg without having installed it first.

Enjoy!
