The new "file absent" marker related suggestion
« on: June 30, 2003, 02:46:08 pm »

I find the new "file absent" marker in the default view very useful, especially to access network files on my laptop. I let some of the files cached for offline viewing. When I am not connected, I can exactly see, which files are with me.

I have three requests to make this feature more useful:
1) A similar overlay icon in Album view. This should include 3 icons: All files missing, some files missing, all files accessible.

2) A way to filter unavailable files. I realize that checking all files all the time for availability may degrade the performance. Maybe it could only be check when I hit the refresh button.

3) I mentioned this before: A right menu click to set and unset files offline / online. This should be an easy program that just propagates the request to the operating system. This may not work in all versions of windows though. But hey!; it works in my windows.

Good ideas.

We're a little limited by what we can do because the missing / not missing logic is run on demand as the file is displayed the first time.  Scanning all the files up front (instead of on demand) would be pretty slow.

Anyway, thanks for the ideas Tolga.

Is there any way to deliberately mark files as offline?

I want to use MC to manage a large collection of my video's which I keep offline but I want to add them when they're on the disk, then just mark them as offline so that MC doesn't remove them when I clear the library etc.?

Nila,

you could create a smartlist that filters by location and add that smartlist to view scheme's properties.
unfortunately filtering based on smartlists that way makes MC crawl (at least for large libraries/smartlists; large > 10k files)

or you could create a playlist and add all 'offline' files manually....

that doesn't work though with updating the library using the tool - it'd still remove them all.
