Streaming DSD to a Pioneer Elite SC-95
« on: September 06, 2017, 05:26:26 pm »

I guess I just don't get it.

My SC-95 is supposed to be able to manage DSD in various modes via USB.  I can not get my efforts to work.  I got a media transfer USB cable with male USB A on both ends.  The computer never 'sees' the amplifier/receiver.  Media Center 23 for Windows does not show an output for USB for the SC-95, but does have an ASIO for USB device.  Choosing that output and streaming DSD, I have no sound on the USB input.  I tried various modes of DSD without success.

Can I stream DSD format to my receiver's decoder?  Any help for this?

Thanks Charlie

Try playing flac or mp3 first.
Read the device's manual to see how the USB port can be used.

I spent a few minutes reading the web site and the manual.

https://www.pioneerelectronics.com/PUSA/Home/AV-Receivers/Elite+Receivers/SC-95#overview

It's not clear to me that DSD can be streamed to it.  They don't say too much about it.  They do say that the front USB connector can play DSD files, but maybe that's if they are on a USB stick.

Not all DSD files can be played though.  Read carefully.

Trying an easier format might give you some clues.

I got a media transfer USB cable with male USB A on both ends.  The computer never 'sees' the amplifier/receiver.

Generally speaking, for a computer to see a USB device as a "sound card" or DAC,  the device in question needs to have a USB B connector.  When a receiver only has a USB A connector, that normally means that the receiver can talk to USB thumb drives, but NOT to computers.

If your receiver has a USB B port on the back, that's what you should connect the computer to.  If it ONLY has USB A, it likely can NOT talk to a computer at all.  Check with the manufacturer to be sure.

After a quick read, it seems that DSD is supported over HDMI. That means it is supported from a SACD player. This is a common feature of receivers.  Unfortnately, DSD is not supported over HDMI from a PC.

From the manual, usb seems to only support usb drives and Apple mobile devices.

Manuals and specs are always vague on the specifics of DSD, but it seems like your receiver does not support DSD from a  computer.

Thank you all for the news.  I knew there must be something I wasn't getting.  I need to learn more about USB A & B ports I guess.  Oh, well!

If HDMI works with an SACD player, it should work from a PC.

Actually, no. GPUs, which control HDMI, don't support passing DSD.
