My search has come up empty, so this post is my last opportunity to find an answer...

Question:
Can JRiver (MAC) Software Player be installed on an iPad2 and output the digital (Hi-Rez) music file to an external DAC via a Lightning-to-USB"B" connector on the DAC?

In essence, can an iPad2 function just like a Mac laptop with the JRiver player?

Media Center only works on OSX, not on iOS, so no, it cannot run on an iPad.

Our solution for iPads is JRemote.

1. Is JRemote able to "play" a Hi-Rez file and send via the Lightning connector to an external DAC's USB-B connector?

2. Or is JRemote simply a "remote" for an Apply laptop?

Note: the customer has only an iPad2. He does NOT have an Apple laptop or desktop.

JRemote for IOS is just a remote for the media center when it resides on a MAC.

This may help you or there may be an ios app music player, the onkyo high res player is meant to be good but don’t know if it will output to a lightning dac.

JRiver although an excellent product is not a solution for your current setup.

Another option might be to add a Qnap NAS to store music files  as JRiver have a QNap option, but I have not used it.

JRemote for IOS is just a remote for the media center when it resides on a MAC.

JRemote allows you to stream files from the server to the iOS device too. It's the main thing I use it for.
I don't know about playing high-res files to an external DAC though. I use it with headphones on my iPhone.

Yes you are correct but in the context of the op, media centre can’t reside on ios so the fact jremote will act as a player is not a solution in this particular case.
