I purchased JRiver Media Center 23 Master License at a discounted price as an existing customer. I also purchased Illustrate's dBPowerAMP Reference 16.2 64 bit and Perfect Tunes 21 64 bit. I ripped, encoded, and backed up along with synchronized my Red Book CDs to FLAC and then to a few lossy audio codecs including AAC, HE-AAC, OGG Vorbis, and LAME MP3. The AAC and HE-AAC files are not being imported into JRiver Media Center 23. The files end with .aac rather than .m4a, .m4p, or .m4b. The old JRiver Audio Formats Wiki lists .aac files as supported. Can someone help me to import my AAC and HE-AAC folders successfully? Please provide step by step instructions and let me know what information or data you need from me. Thank you.

Download 64 bit build
This is an early build of JRiver Media Center 23 for Windows 64-bit, recommended for advanced users only. You may experience new problems, so please back up your library before installing.

I am not trying to sound snarky, but why should I download and install the 64 bit build when it is clearly stated that it is not stable? What is it going to do for me to fix my problem? Can you explain that in detail?

  • Long cold Winter...

Does it, by chance, work if you rename one of the .aac files to .m4a?

I tried to rename it from .aac to .m4a and JRiver does not import it. When I say that JRiver Media Center 23 32 bit is not importing my AAC and HE-AAC folders and files, what I mean is that the Audio -> Artists or Albums does not show the AAC or HE-AAC music albums listed for playback. So, it looks like I am missing both my AAC and HE-AAC music in total. Is the 64 bit version going to fix this if anyone can verify for me before I take the risk of installing it before it is stable and ready? Why is this happening with the 32 bit version anyway?

To be clear, JRiver Media Center 23 32 bit did import my FLAC, OGG Vorbis, and L.A.M.E. MP3 music albums successfully. I just used the Library Manager feature to create multiple independent libraries where my high-resolution, audio books, pictures, and videos are imported successfully for each library, but my AAC and HE-AAC music did not import and show up under the Audio -> Artists or Albums panel.

1.  Do not use the 64 bit version.  OM was speculating that you were *already* using it and that might be the source of your problem.  You are clearly using the 32 bit version.  Stay with that version.

2.  It's possible that your files have been imported, but the metadata is incorrect or incomplete.  To test this, go to Audio > Files .  Then drill down into a directory that you know has these AAC files and try to find one.  Do you see it?  If so, MC imported it.  If not, just to be extra sure, type a file name of one of the AAC files in the search box and see if you can locate it that way.  If this doesn't work, I'm not sure why your files are not being imported.

3.  You probably don't want to use 3, 4, or more libraries.  It's unnecessary and it's cumbersome.  If you aren't bothered by switching libraries constantly to find your content, then it might be OK for you.  Just know that with Views, you really don't need separate libraries at all.  It *might* make sense to have a separate low res library for your lossy files, depending up on how you intend to use those files.  But for audiobooks and videos, having a separate library doesn't make a lot of sense in most cases.  Just import audio, audio books and video into one library and be happy.

I am not sure your AAC files can have tags written to them. They may have imported but MC would not know the Artist or Album if there were not tags to read.

See if they may be under unknown. Just a thought but you may need to do a search for "AAC tags".

With regard to multiple libraries, I did import my entire private media library into each independent library; I created independent libraries for each lossy audio codec. For example, my audio books, videos, high-resolution music albums, and pictures are imported within each independent library, but I labeled each one based on the broad category such as lossless, OGG Vorbis, AAC, HE-AAC, and L.A.M.E. MP3. I am fine with switching among different independent libraries.

I loaded my AAC and HE-AAC libraries one at a time and I checked the Audio -> Files. JRiver Media Center 23 32 bit imported the AAC and HE-AAC folders and files, but my metadata must be incorrect because I can not see my artists and albums in Audio -> Artists or Albums in both my AAC and HE-AAC independent libraries. How do I quickly fix my metadata problems for my AAC and HE-AAC folders? I thought Illustrate's dBPowerAMP Reference 16.2 64 bit took care of this, but I do own Perfect Tunes 2.1 64 bit. Is there any way I can fix my missing metadata using these software products or can you recommend another third-party and free software application to fix them? I think I am getting closer to discovering the root cause of my JRiver problems with each follow-up post in my thread. Thanks and keep the ideas flowing.

I solved my problem. When I purchased Illustrate's dBPowerAMP Reference 16.2 64 bit and Perfect Tunes 2.1 64 bit, I chose to download all of the additional add-ons and plug-ins for dBPowerAMP Reference 16.2 64 bit. I chose Advanced Audio Compression (AAC) as my codec to convert my FLAC to AAC music albums and this was not correct. I fixed it by choosing m4a FDK (AAC) as my chosen codec and I am in the process of converting my FLAC to AAC-LC and HE-AAC V1 music albums. To test my theory, I chose one specific FLAC music album and I used dBPowerAMP Reference 16.2 64 bit with the chosen m4a FDK (AAC) codec to convert that single album to AAC-LC and then I used JRiver Media Center 23 64 bit to switch to my AAC library and configured the automatic import to select the target folder. It worked. JRiver imported it successfully with the correct metadata preserved intact. This is my mistake. I am new to AAC as a beginner.

To reiterate what Brian said. Having multiple libraries is indeed possible and there may be the *occasional* situation where it is the best solution but it's certainly not very common and not usually the recommended approach. MC is very powerful and is very capable of producing the 'views' of the existing media you have from a single (larger) library. YMMV of course and Billy could be wrong  :)

See my footer for my latest MC video - ironically on creating 'views'.

For now, I am a beginner with regards to learning about the advanced features of JRiver Media Center 23 32 bit. I will learn about creating different views within it in the near future and I am going to think about creating a master library from which I can customize different views for parts of the master library.

My videos cover most of what you need to get up and running to quite an advanced level in a very short period of time. If you discover anything is missing from them post to the forum for additional help.

I carefully read the official JRiver Wiki about creating custom views and panes and I just finished organizing my single and master private media library; I backed up the media library and synchronized it on both PCs.

So, I have one master library and all of my audio folders and files are organized by different audio codecs like FLAC, AAC, HE-AAC, L.A.M.E. MP3, and OGG Vorbis.

I also have statistical information about my master library like the total number of artists, albums, genres, dates, bit depths, and bit rates. I have different views for my videos which are organized in a similar fashion. Ditto for my images.

I double checked to ensure that my JRiver Media Center 23 32 bit master library has the appropriate number and types of views and it is well organized to my preferences before backing it up and synchronizing it on both PCs.

Now I am learning how to use this software product a bit better and I am getting my money's worth. I will continue to pay for discounted upgrades for the foreseeable future. It is an awesome "jukebox" software product.

I did not watch Spike's videos; I read the official JRiver Wiki and figured it out on my own. Thanks for the tips.
