Visualizations stop working when playing bitstream DSD. Any fix?
« on: September 23, 2017, 02:51:09 am »

All other file types the visualization works. Soon as you play DSD files, it loses the signal for visualizations. Is there a setting to fix this??

Makes sense to me.  If you are bitstreaming, then MC isn't decoding the data at all.  It's just sending it.  So there's nothing for it to display.

Is there any workaround for it? Visualizations are one of my main aspects of enjoying musik. Hate to gain some sound quality through DSD and then lose the visuals. I would assume it has to be possible even if MC doesn't decode it.

Don't bitstream.

And keep in mind if you don't bitstream, all DSD will then be converted on-the-fly to PCM when playing back. There's no way around it, can't have your cake and eat it too in this case.

On a previous system bitstreaming didn't really do much. On my new DAC, through USB audio, it does make a considerable audio improvement when switched on. One of my third party visualizers, WhiteCap, has a standalone app that lets u select input source. Although my DAC isn't listed, my PC's onboard Line-In is listed. I'm going to try and run RCA cables from the out of the DAC into the PC line-in and see if it can grab the secondary signal through that. Is there an input source select for MC built-in visualizations somewhere as well?

As an update: I tried running the RCA outs of my DAC into the Line-In of my PC. Visualizations still can't get the signal. I'm guessing because they are two different audio devices and bitstreaming runs exclusive on the output end :-\

Well here's a feature request for MC24. There has to be a way to grab bitstreaming output signal in SW and route it to visualizers/analyzers.

If anybody has any other ideas, I'm willing to try them and report back. ?

Well here's a feature request for MC24. There has to be a way to grab bitstreaming output signal in SW and route it to visualizers/analyzers.
You could try this:
Create a new zone called Null. Set the audio device to Null Output.
Link this to your other zone. (right-click and select link zones)

The Null zone should be able to display the visualizer since it's decoding the DSD audio, but not sending it to an output device.
The linked zone should still bitstream to your DAC.

My main system is down for a few days so I don't have a lot of music to test, but I downloaded a few sample tracks and it seemed to work.

Not familiar with creating zones. Is this something you're doing within MC?

Thanks for the suggestion RD. So I tried this 4-5x and the first time it seemed to work before the tracks started stuttering and MC crashed. Every other attempt after just causes my MC to crash and all sound settings get set to default/Direct Sound. It was worth a shot.

What are your settings for things like Memory playback?
Are you using the 32-bit or 64-bit player?

This is playing the tracks twice, since it's bitstreaming + decoding, so your PC has to be capable of handling that.
