ntdll.dl Crash [Solved (BitDefender Antivirus)]

Been experiencing issues lately with crashing for no obvious reasons. I was on the stable channel and decided to hop on the latest channel with same problem.

No plugins outside the defaults and DNLA server is disabled right now.
I have backed up, de-install, reboot, re-install & restore with no better result.

No real major upgrades or large app installation lately on my system. Just the normal push of updates from MS$ and and latest monthly Office 365 update (problem existed before this update).

Problem 1:
Doing simple search across the library and it hangs. I have the zip logfile package package for anyone who wants it.

Problem 2:
When the system is idle (middle of the night idle) MC crashes for no reason and reports NTDLL problem in the Windows Application Event log. Unable to capture this log as it appears to reset itself. I can try again if there are interests.

Yes, BitDefender 2018 version. No violations recorded. Is there something you would like me to do?


There is an auto FW rule allowed for MC:

Yeah, I actually guessed right with you using Bitdefender. Anyways it's Bitdefender causing the crashes by trying to inject its own Bitdefender Active Threat Control library (atcuf32.dll and/or avcuf32.dll) into Media Center 23's executable. I've read about this exact same issue (ntdll.dll crashes) happening with other software when running Bitdefender.

You need to exclude MC23 and all its files within Bitdefender in its antivirus/HIPS exclusions list, if you can (e.g. if you're using the paid Bitdefender). If you're on the free version of Bitdefender the only way you can fix it is by uninstalling Bitdefender, unfortunately.

That should hopefully do it!

P.S. atcuf32.dll/avcuf32.dll (and atcuf64.dll/avcuf64.dll for 64-bit apps) are the Bitdefender Active Threat Control libraries. But yeah, it's known to cause crashes in all kinds of software, including World of Warcraft, among others. :P

Hi;

I have set parameters & rebooted just to be clean... Interestingly enough BitDefender prompted me to trust the MC 23 executable which it has not done before. Problem 1 seems to be resolved as I can search & scroll through the library without a crash of MC.  8)

Will advise on any other discoveries or issues.

Well, recently I came upon and randomly read a report of a similar ntdll.dll crash being reported for a desktop adblocking program I use. As the issue was being looked into (and crash logs were being examined) it was found the crash was being caused by Bitdefender injecting its Bitdefender Active Threat Control library into the program's executable and the only workaround was adding the program's executables to Bitdefender's exclusions (which unfortunately the free version of Bitdefender doesn't have any exception options, so removal of Bitdefender is the only workaround). Upon reading this report days ago, I searched out and saw other examples of this happening with other applications, including World of Warcraft.

That's why when coming upon this topic and seeing a ntdll.dll crash, the first thought that came to mind was "is Bitdefender being used here?" so I asked and the rest is history.

But yeah, one reason I don't recommend Bitdefender anymore. IMO, an AV vendor doing this type of thing is VERY questionable, especially if it's causing applications to straight up crash because of their library injection.

It seems to me as time passes, some AV apps themselves begin to act more like viruses/malware doing stuff like this for the sake of "security" and end up doing more harm than good.

This is why I don't run dedicated antivirus/antimalware applications anymore.

Thanks. My JRiver server (just a dedicated Win10 music / file server) started crashing routinely in mid-September after having been rock solid for a few years. Hoping this will resolve the issue for a few more years (or forever).

Hi all - I'm not a JRiver Media Center user, although I'm so happy about finding this thread that I'm going to check out the software (how's that for word of mouth?)

Instead, I just came here to say THANK YOU to everyone in this thread.  I've spent the better part of the last three weeks systematically trying to figure out what it is that was causing one of my programs -- in my case, the Dashlane password utility -- to crash every day with an NTDLL.DLL error.  I was able to narrow it down to a very small handful of programs... and now, based upon what you've all said in this thread above, I'm convinced it's my total security package: BitDefender.  Detailed searches on the NTDLL.DLL crashes and the error codes I've seen pointed me right to this thread.

Can't tell you guys how happy I am to have stumbled on this thread, with you all clueing me into the fact that BD is the culprit, and that there are some solutions within BD (I'm a paid user).  So thank you all. 

Now, just for that, I'm downloading the trial version of JRiver Media Center to check it out and hopefully show my appreciation because of the software's awesome users --  all of you. :)

Ahh, looks like search engines are picking up this thread when searching for the source of the ntdll.dll crashes, that's good - hopefully it helps others having this issue. It's unfortunate though that these issues with Bitdefender have been ongoing with various types of software, including Media Center. It was pretty good luck that I was reading about this same ntdll.dll issue occurring with another application then remembered what was causing it after reading this post. I'm really glad everyone is (hopefully) finding a solution to this dreadful problem. :)

Hopefully Bitdefender fixes these issues. It's one of the top antivirus applications in the world (according to the multiple third-party tests and awards) but having issues like this makes me not want to run dedicated antivirus software anymore. If I need to, I'll just do all my web surfing and downloading in a virtual machine!

It's funny, people might wonder why Jim is always asking about if there's any antivirus software being used and suggesting it might be causing issue(s). It's because they can, have and still do! I've seen countless times antivirus applications from all different vendors causing all kinds of weird issues on a user's system and the applications they use. It might not always be the case, but you'd be surprised how many times it really is the antivirus software causing the issue(s). It might seem ludicrous having someone suggesting that antivirus software might be the cause, but after reading this thread you should probably think twice before dismissing the idea.

I recently switched from Bitdefender paid to Avira free, and it's been working well for my Media Center setups, both as server and client.
