FLAC Files Cause Stream to DLNA Device to Stop
« on: November 04, 2017, 08:52:37 am »

I can stream mp3 files with no problem through my Sony Media Player.  When a FLAC song comes up MC23 stops and displays the message "There was a problem controlling your selected DLNA device......"   I have been streaming FLAC successfully with this set-up on MC 22 and 23.  No changes on my end to computer software/hardware except normal Windows updates. Everything seemed to play fine up to a month ago though I have a mixture of mp3 and flac going at any one time so cannot say exactly when this started because some playlists have flac and some don't. Looking over my playlists I can say streaming flac over my DLNA was working at least into the July timeframe.

Flac file plays fine in MC23 player.

Any ideas?

Take a look at the FLAC files that cause problems.  There are some high bitrate FLAC files and even multi-channel FLAC.  The Sony player may not like them.

as an experiment, I tried playing Flac from an older playlist I know for sure never stopped playing and those now cause it to stop.   I have the setting on MC to convert when necessary to high mp3.  I don't mind playing around with those settings to get everything to play.  My ears cannot tell the difference between 320 and FLAC.

Should I try Audio Conversion to Always convert?

Answer: Tried it with older FLAC I have listened to a hundred times and it still stops.

Any other DLNA settings I should look at in MC?

Other ideas?

Try “Always Convert” “PCM 16 bit No Header” (L16)

My option is just PCM 16 - I don't see No Header (L16).   Are those separate settings somewhere else?  I tried the Always Convert/PCM16 and it still stops when playing a file I have listened to multiple times in the past.

BTW -  I believed pcm 16 was lossless and more data so thought that was more likely to cause a problem than using the high bandwidth mp3 encoder

I tried both Low and Medium MP3 encoders with no success

If you are on MC v23 then PCM 16 L16 No Header is the first option in the list.

This will transcode both FLAC and MP3 to a format that your renderer can play.

Screenshot of what I am seeing attached.   I don't see No Header (L16) in the label.  Is this where I should be setting this option?

No.

You need to look in Add or Configure DLNA Servers. (Towards the top of your screenshot).

I would never have figured that on on my own. That works! Problem fixed.  The Sony Media Player froze up after that change and I needed to do an unplug and plug back in to restart.  All good.  Thank-you Andrew!!!
