Install J River Media Center 23 on Solus OS
« on: November 23, 2017, 06:31:33 am »

Hello All.

Does anyone know if it is possible to install J R Media Center 23 (Linux version of course!!) on Solus OS ?
I previously used Linux Mint and installed J River (and Master License) with no problems.
I now use Solus OS and i cannot figure out how to install the software.
The instructions in the J River Linux Forum dont seem to work on Solus OS (maybe im doing something wrong !!)
Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks

Well, it's worth noting that installing Media Center on platforms other than Debian is considered not supported, so Solus would fall into this category. Also Solus isn't based on Debian/Ubuntu/Linux Mint, so the posted tutorials will not work for it. In fact, Solus uses a completely different package manager (eopkg) and is completely different compared to Debian and its derivatives like Ubuntu and Linux Mint. Unless some technical user uses Solus and figures out how to get Media Center working there and decides to write up a tutorial for it, I honestly don't see it happening. Looking at Solus and their packages, looks like they have issues getting Google Chrome (not Chromium) working on Solus without needing Snaps/Flatpak support, so yeah.

I've never used Solus (but I have tried the Budgie desktop environment) so I have no idea how to get it working there, sorry.

OK

Thanks Awesome Donkey.

I sort of suspected it would be a no go but thanks for your input !!

Its a shame because Solus OS is a great distro, but like you said someone may come up with something so J River can be installed on it.

My Plan B would be to use Ubuntu Budgie (which uses Solus own desktop),giving me access to more repositories, ive already tested it and J River installs fine with no issues .

Thanks again

Yeah, Ubuntu Budgie would be the best alternative in this case, IMO.

I just copied the files from the deb into the /usr folder and it worked fine.

Solus doesn't support deb so in case something was missing i installed the depends that matched from the control file as well

Depends: libc6 (>= 2.19), libasound2 (>= 1.0.28), libuuid1 (>= 2.25), libx11-6 (>= 2:1.6), libxext6 (>= 2:1.3), libxcb1 (>= 1.1), libxdmcp6 (>= 1:1.1), libstdc++6 (>= 4.9), libgtk2.0-0 (>= 2.24), libgl1-mesa-glx | libgl1, libpango-1.0-0(>= 1.36) | libpango1.0-0 (>= 1.36), libpangoft2-1.0-0 (>= 1.36) | libpango-cairo-1.0-0 (>= 1.36), xdg-utils
Recommends: vorbis-tools (>= 1.4.0), musepack-tools

MC's deps don't cover everything it uses because some packages are usually installed that the above require.
If your versions are correct you might just want to double check stuff by doing

ldd /usr/llib/jriver/Media\ Center\ 23/*.so | grep -i found

You shouldn't see any output because the above would return "not found" if something was missing.
