FLAC files. What, why and how?

Seen them mentioned here a few times. Never heard of them before coming here.
What makes 'em?
Why use them?
What plays them? MC?

MC can make them by using the External Encoder option.
MC may be able to play them by using the same procedure as with AAC files. If not, Foobar and quite a few other players will handle them.

FLAC files can now be RG'd at the encoding stage.

Cheers Xen.
Interesting stuff. "Lossless" seems to be the word of the moment just now. I got some time off coming up soon and might use some of it to investigate further. I have around 23 hours of vinyl recordings here in .wav files and the "cleaned up" copies represent god-knows how many hours of work. To lose them through any hardware failure or miscreant software would reduce me to a quivering mess!!!!!
I keep telling myself....
"must make hard copies of them"......
"must make hard copies of them"......
"must make hard copies of them"......
"must make hard copies of them"......
"must make hard copies of them"......
and I still haven't done it ::)
I will get it done though, just need to settle on a lossless compression solution first :)

Ditto Marko,

Now that I can fit a ton of FLAC's/Apes's on DVD disks from my new Sony, I have no excuses. One thing that I'm not clear on is whether cue sheets can tell an encoder where to split the tracks on conversion to a lossy (such as ogg). I want to rip each of my CD's as just one track. Not sure about the tagging either. Where would the individual track names (and artist if it's a multi-artist CD) be stored? In the cue sheet? May be best to rip/encode tracks individually. Questions to ponder...

In my opinion you have 2 options :

APE - but to play only on your computer

WMA 9 loosless- more or less same speed ,same size-
to this day , as well to play only on your computer.

But can be that soon players  kind of Ipod will play lossless. In this case it will be WMA ,not APE

Because of it ,i use WMA9 now ,beside this i can tag them with MM ST

You may try to smoke ONLY tobacco from time to time ::) ;D ..

Look quite strange what you want to do.
I do not 'see' why. But i would like to understand.
Are you happy with your DVD burner?

Any news about OGG transcoding without any lost of quality?

But tobacco doesn't produce the pretty colors and visual distortions that I like to see :(.

The Sony is awesome. Handles everything very well so far. I can't get DVD playback through MC with it (throws up an error box about lack of video memory and a few other things). PowerDVD is real nice, though. Watched "Once Upon a Time in America" (director's cut). One of the best movies of all time...De Niro hits it (when doesn't he?).

Regarding lossless...
Not to take anything away from ape (great format & frontend) but there is already hardware support for FLAC. Being under the Xiph umbrella will only increase its exposure. Many portables that will support vorbis will support FLAC. Neuros and the Rio Pearl are two examples of this. Not that I would fill a portable up with FLAC's, but being able to would sure be nice.

Let's imagine a kind of 20G Ipod- i saw another brand with more than 20G-

In this case to use lossless on it makes sense.
You can put a lot of albums on it and have the best sound possible.

I'am REALLY waiting for any player playing OGG.
Right now ,when ripping my cds i rip to mp3 AND ogg.
A friend of me upload the ogg ,and i delete them.
I keep mp3 on my machine.
The day there is a ogg player ,i will make DVD backup of my mp3 ,delete them and download all the ogg from my friend.
I keep WMA9 lossless format of all cds friends lent me .
But look like i need to read about FLAC.
I do not care about the format ,i care only about to be able  to take it outside of the computer.

Concerning OGG transcoding ,i saw they are working on a lossless transcoding== you have ogg 7 or 8 .
You want smaller format for your player ,let say ogg5.
Transcoding from 7-8 to 4 would give you the same quality than direct rip cd to ogg4.

I use my computer as well for DVD - i have a 19" screen-
MC works for me , but i prefer WinDVd - my version of PowerDVd is not 2000,XP compatible.
I have now to see if i can control WinDVD with my Blaster Extigy  remote control -- they say i can-
Because cordless mini keyboard/mouse mess around with my cordless headphones.
We have so many problems with all the money we spend on gadgets.....

I want the Sony external but still very expensive here

Do the Rio Pearl and Neuros support FLAC already?

Kiwi...

No...still Work in Progress. But for both, release could be relatively soon. I'm guessing a couple months but I also thought that iRiver would have ogg support 6 months ago.

Zev...

Reduction in the bitrate is called bit peeling. As you said, a -q 7 dropped down to -q 4 should equal a rip/encode directly to -q 4. I don't know what the state of affairs is regarding this. Even if I could do it, I probably wouldn't. Space is cheap and I would likely keep all my ogg's at -q 8.

Can be good for people with [ still to come] ogg player with 128MB.
Concerning iRiver , like you ,i was sure it would be long ago...
I do not know what Real is doing of the deal they have withogg.
The day they use ogg on they RealOne ,ogg will be put on the front.
At which price you may think , knowing that Real are so much BIG F--G B--RDs , that Bill looks like a very very nice fellow.....

A minidics player - player only and not Sony- OGG compatible would make me so happy.
There is only mp3 and - maybe- wma  minidisc players.
You burn mp3 on a minidisc as you do with regular cds and play it .
The players are so small and nice looking........
