Mac mini (minimum spec for JR23)
« on: December 08, 2017, 09:43:34 am »

Hi guys

Looking to purchase a used Mac mini to run JRiver headlessly along with JRemote.

Had a good look round the forums but I can't seem to see any minimum hardware specs.

Anyone running a similar system successfully/or know what I'd need to get/avoid. Minimum processor, minimum ram, minimum OS, that kind of thing.

I'm looking more at the 2010 aluminium unibody onwards.

Thanks in advance.

We require at least OSX 10.7 these days, so any of the old ones that only run 10.6 are out. Otherwise if you just want to play music off of it, even modest specs should be fine.

Good to know, appreciate the response. So probably best to look at a 'current' late 2014 then.

My AV amp (Denon AVR-X6300) has a decent on board DAC so would it just be a case of HDMI out from the Mac mini into the receiver (the added bonus being I could use the TV as a display if required)?

Alterative would be optical out into receiver or DNLA over network/ethernet.

I'm after best sound quality rather than simplicity.

I chose a late 2012 i7 2.5Ghz model because I could upgrade the memory to 16GB and install a second drive, effectively making it a Mac Mini Server. I prefer the flexibility of this platform over those which came later.

It boots off of a 480GB SSD and has a 2TB spindle drive which is where my home directory is when I login.

It is running Mac OS X 10.13.2 High Sierra without any issues.

Media Center 23 has been running on it for months

Running a late 2012, i5, 16GB, SSD 64gb (system only) + 500gb internal and USB Hard drives.
Runs really cleanly.
I use LMS to stream to Squeezebox Touch (wifi prefers a maximum 24/96 to avoid dropouts) as well as optical out playback through a Naim Unitiqute. All including JR23 work flawlessly.
I would recommend a larger SSD

Cheers guys, I'm keeping my eye out for a late 2104, Ideally 3.0 Ghz, 16Mb RAM, 512 Gb SSD. Want to future proof as much as possible. These seem to be fetching around £700.

Although I intend to use it mainly heedlessly with JRemote it will be handy to have it connected to my TV for occasional web browsing. I think the late 2014's have 4k output via HDMI.

Music storage will initially be on a 2TB USB3 external hard drive. Plan to get a NAS at some point and run that over ethernet.
