Resolution issues
« on: December 02, 2017, 01:20:43 pm »

So I'm using a mac mini to a Sony DAC (UDA-1), but I can't seem to adjust the resolution when in DSP and output format past none. The audio device says Sony USB Amplifier (Core Audio). The Sony DAC does up to 4XDSD. Anything I try just produces static.

Could it have anything to do with the connection from the mac mini to the Sony DAC?

What connection are you using? USB?

Are you saying that you are unable to change the sample rate in the DSP screen? If you're using the usb, have you loaded the correct drivers?

I would try the toslink connection to ensure you can get some sound from your system and then go back to usb for the HD sample rates your DAC can use.

There's a chance you might need to open the Audio MIDI Setup app on the Mac, and set the Sony DAC to the highest bit-depth/sample rate supported. This is required for some DACs with Mac, especially when trying to do DSD.

Donkey, I think that's it! Having never dealt with this Apple MIDI, should I just max everything out as my DAC can handle anything thrown at it?

Well, just for the Sony DAC you should max it out. Like I have here at 2ch 32-bit/192 kHz: https://i.imgur.com/AEU9uSh.png

Mr. Donkey, now that you've helped me with that, any tips on converting formats for a large amount of audio files quickly?

Select, right click, convert.

Try a few before you do very many.

Thanks for the reply, I can get it to work, but I have almost 25,000 files to convert. I've done about 3000 a day so far, just trying to see if there was a quicker way.

There is no limit on how many you can convert at once.

It might help to understand why you're converting.  From what to what?

I have a new car stereo (Kenwood DDX9904s) that plays FLAC files. I have about 25,0000 songs, some were FLAC but most were ALAC or M4A...so I have to convert everything to FLAC.

3,000 a day on Mac hardware sounds about right. Don't think there's anything you can do to "speed" up the process - it's likely going as fast as it can.

It's probably not freezing.  The OS just can't get a response.  Let it run.

Open Activity Monitor (in Applications -> Utilities).

If it's really not doing anything, you will see ~0% CPU activity.

So yep, every time the conversion "freezes" for a couple hours, it's when it hits a low res, lower bitrate file.

If it's small enough, send it to johnt at jriver and include a link to this thread.  Otherwise post it on dropbox or similar.
