Windows 10 and MC23 stopping and freezing
« on: November 20, 2017, 09:00:25 pm »

Hi -

I have a Dell XPS 15 9560 and I have reinstalled the OS and updated the drivers and all the software I have on the laptop but I keep having issues with MC23 freezing and stopping play.  I run my portable speaker or headphones through a CambridgeMagic XS DAC.  But every once in a while it fails to play, freezes, and then I have to shut down the laptop which is then followed by a blue screen start up dialogue.  Today I got some sort of exception error 0xc06d007e.  See attached.

https://www.cambridgeaudio.com/usa/en/products/hifi-and-home-cinema/dacmagic-xs

I can't find any pattern.  It will happen sometimes with the first attempt to play a song and sometimes an hour or two later of continuous play.

Help???

That is a driver problem somewhere.

Can you change audio settings?

When it fails, try power cycling the DAC, not the computer, just to see what happens.

I have reinstalled the Realtek driver and MC23 has been reinstalled.  I'll play around with it and try to monitor the playing with setting changes done "one at a time" ... patience ... much needed ...

Are you using WDM?

What version of MC?

I now have checked the WDM Driver and it is my default driver.  I have CA DacMagicXS 2.0 [WASAPI] selected in MC 23 Audio Device which in turn plugs into my FuGo speaker.

I have a good feeling about this ...

WDM is on the input side.  It allows other programs to use MC as an audio engine.  There was a fix for a WDM problem in 23.0.81.

Package installer failure - MC23 stopped working - Crashed Windows 10 64 Bit
« Reply #9 on: November 28, 2017, 02:02:56 pm »

Well just when thought it was over.

I did a clean install and was running MC23 for the past couple hours and then I did some browsing with Firefox Quantum (which I have now uninstalled) ... anyway MC23 stopped working and then the blue screen showed up.  Incidentally the dump file failed to be created due to some error during its creation.

So any suggestions on what happened and how to keep MC23 from crashing my computer?

  • Autumn shade...

Are you running any antivirus/antimalware software? If so, what?

BTW I installed the 32 bit of MC23 because it says on the download page the 64 bit is for advanced users.  Any advice on whether I should install the 64 bit version?

You could install the 64 bit version if you want to.  It shouldn't make a difference, but it's worth a try.

I'll try that but isn't there something that error message is trying to tell us ...

I'm going to go back to an earlier restore point at the very least.

I hope I don't have to let go of MC considering I paid for it.

Is this the only support method or is their a directd support hot line or something?

BTW it also starts to buffer before it crashes and that's with my files on an SSD.

Well I sent the laptop in for repair and the technicians replaced the 5G0HC - Daughterboard - whatever that is.  So it would seem it was not a software problem.  When it comes back and I start playing MC23 on it ... I'll post a final verdict.  Fingers crossed.  First time ever I have had a problem with a Dell or any computer purchase I have made.  I guess probability caught up with me.

Well the issue still persists.  Groove Music plays without the application freezing and causing an unexpected shut down but MC 23 does.  Blue screen appears but not for long and no dump files created.  I downloaded and Media Monkey and it too crashed but there was some error that Media Monkey displayed about not being able to INSERT ... something and then it crashed before I could read anymore.

So can anyone confirm for me that this is a Windows 10 issue?  Is JRiver doing anything with their software to resolve this?   I saw some stuff about a script that checks processes but that seems like a work around that an average user like me is reluctant to tangle with.

Something you can try......

If you have Cambridge drivers installed, uninstall them. Switch the DAC to USB 2.0 mode (by pressing both switches?) and let Windows install its own drivers (make sure you have the Fall Update for W10). Go into Tools/Options/Audio and select the DAC with WASAPI and do not use the WDM driver. See if it behaves differently.

I am first going to use MC23 today without the WDM driver.  No DAC.  And with a Blue tooth connection to a JBL Flip 4 speaker.  Cambridge drivers are uninstalled.  Audio option in MC23 is selected to JBL WASAPI.  Playing has commenced and amusingly starting with Handel's Hallelujah chorus ... at this point some divine intervention is not off the table.  Thanks for the suggestion I'll keep you and others following this posted.

Well 33 minutes into the playing it crashed.  But it crashed right after I used the F2 function key to turn down the volume.  It went to a blue screen but did not create a dump file.  That probably was just a coincidence because I had used the keyboard volume controls earlier to adjust the volume.

A blue screen is usually a driver or other hardware problem.

Video drivers are the most common source of problems.

Try playing and minimizing all applications.

I've run preboot hardware tests, all the Dell hardware tests, and other memory tests and I also sent laptop back to Dell for service.
I also turned off most of the visual enhancement features associated with Windows 10.
I'll check to see about the graphics drivers but according to the Dell Support tool I am all up to date.

I would try rolling back the most recent Windows update.  It caused other video problems.

JimH,

What specific update is that?  I want to make sure I rolling back the correct one.

I have run the ePSA Pre-Boot System Assessment (4304.17) twice.  All test passed.

For what its worth I have been playing music with Groove Music for the last three hours or so with no issues.  So MC23 and Windows 10 aren't playing very nice with each other.
