I have a license for media jukebox 8

it dont work for Media centre

do I need to buy a new one

you may need to upgrade if you bought MJ8 after December 3rd 2002

I actually had a license for 7.2 not 8

, So I take it you cant upgrade from 7.2 to 9 ?

nop, you can't upgrade from 7.2 to 9 license, you have to buy a new one
