IdPi tagging problem
« on: January 01, 2018, 05:48:43 pm »

There is a right click menu command called something like “Update files/tags from Library”..

I am having a similar problem with MC on the IdPi not saving some tags from files in the loaded library that resides on my NAS, i.e. "Bitdepth" which I need for a rule to differentiate lo-res from hi-res files. MC23 on my Windows laptop extracts all the tags from the metadata to its library copy from the same NAS.

Where exactly is this Update files/tags from Library?

Thanks!

Right click > library tools > update tags from library

Found it but it says "You have disabled the option to allow Media Center to update tags". Where do I find this to change?

I also just started getting an annoying error message when clicking OK to close the Options menu - "Audio file location cannot be read only". I have no clue why but where can I correct this?

Thanks!

The options page has a search window.

I was able to get rid of the update tag error but why would MC fail to update tags from every file of any album on my NAS? I just get a list of failures for every song file it tries to read on the NAS.

possibly a permissions issue.  it's common with NAS in my experience.

you can try right clicking a folder (in windows) > properties and unchecking the "read only..." box

if that doesn't work there are more complex things to try

Thank you ferday but this is happening on JRiver's new IdPi running MC on Linux Debian. I don't have any of these tag issues with MC23 on my Windows laptop. I'm setting up rules for custom views for hi-res and DSD and need bit depth tags which don't seem to be extracted by MC from my song files which I know are there.

EDIT: Since this topic has been split out on its own, I'd like to echo a comment from a member in the forum where this originated :

" Why do we have to explicitly update tags just to get all the file tags that should have been read by MC on the Id Pi in the first place ?"

Are you sure you want to update the tags from the library? Sounds more like you want to update the library from the tags, I'm assuming you think the existing tags are definitive.
The update tags automatically is disabled by default since it modifies the files.

I thought "update tags from library" meant updating MC's copy of the tags from my library of music on my Synology. So you're saying library in this case is the database MC creates and I should be reading the tags from my NAS and updating MC's library?

Library is the database that MC uses.

Tags are the tags in the file.

They can have different information.

Whatever you do, try a few before you do very many.

Bingo! Thank you. Now I can proceed with my hires/DSD custom views.

Is there some chance I could screw up MC's views and categories by updating its library with my file tags?

No.

Unfortunately I said bingo too soon!

I tested a few albums updating the library from my file tags on the NAS, however upon a reboot of the IdPi they did not stick - I.e. The bit depth field was empty.

I still wonder why I'm having to update tags - why aren't they saved when the library is loaded? At least the tag fields with a value.

How are you using the files on your NAS?
As a network share or are you loading it as a DLNA library?

If you load it as a DLNA library, MC's updating of info from the tags will be transient, the MC library in this case is re-created dynamically each time the DLNA library from the server is loaded.
If you want the library to be "permanent" you should mount the NAS filesystem and import the files into MC using the import function in MC.

I guess I've been loading it as a DLNA library via the library tools dialog. How would one mount the NAS? If you get me past that point, I've seen and used the import function before in the library tools.

BTW, why do I get two copies of many song selections? They just seem to appear.

Thanks!
