Using Oppo UDP203 as player
« on: January 14, 2018, 11:33:00 pm »

Can I use JRiver as media controller to play mkv files using Oppo bluray player to output to TV ?

Mkv files are on Synology NAS and all units are connected via LAN.

What would be the setup ?

Thanks.

Yes.  Set up the 203's DLNA support and MC's media server and MC will see it.  Easiest way to control it is to use JRemote to select the 203 as the destination and play selected media.

Yes, but you will (I think!) need to use this software as well:

http://www.whitebear.ch/mediaserver

It will find the DLNA renderers (Oppo 203) on your network and allow MC's Media Server to play through.

They will then appear under your Playing Now zones in MC and you can send media to the Oppo.

I believe MC should see the Oppo as a DMR out-of-the-box (when DNLA is enabled). In my setup MC finds an Oppo (BDP-103) without help from additional software.  :)

Interesting.  I have two MC Servers running here and only the one using Whitebear is showing the Oppo.  Maybe I've not set up the 2nd server to be aware - will check.

OK, Whitebear is not needed - just check the option

Media Network->Advanced->DLNA Controller

And the Oppo will appear.

Wrong!

My media server is for Logitech / Squeezebox products. It has nothing to do with Oppo or any other brand of devices.

Perhaps you are confusing with my Digital Media Renderer Analyzer which may be used for testing the capabilities of renderers ( http://www.whitebear.ch/dmra )

Does it happen for all of your mkv files? Could be that the file contains something the Oppo doesn't support. To check you could try to directly open the file from the Oppo - it should be able to access network shares as well as seeing MC as a network source.

Works fine accessing shared network folders.
Oppo receives file because tv goes blank and counter on Oppo display shows zero but then freezes and does not play the file.

You should check if the Oppo supports the file - compare MediaInfo output with the specs of the Oppo. The DNLA capabilities of the Oppo could probably get tested with that Whitebear tool mentioned by AndrewFG.

Another thing to try in MC: adjusting DNLA Controller Options for the OPPO - I don't know though what the 203 would support / which settings do work.

There should be no issue using the Oppos as DLNA renderers. I use the 105 smoothly and the 203 should be even better (I think it can now play DSD file over PCM with DoP enable and gaplessly; the 105 cannot. I tried the 95 in the past but Oppo did not update the firmware, so I sold it out))
An yes: wireshark is not need (it is just a network monitor to investigate network issues)

I have an Oppo 203 and regularly use it with MC as a DLNA renderer.
The only issue being MC/JRemote can but iffy at discovering it on the network, so I use Bubble UPnP as a controller which never has an issue seeing it.
Not had any issues playing my files Flac (44.1k to 192k, 2ch, 6ch), DSD (2ch, 6ch), MKV (H264, H265, 4k HDR, DTS-HDMA, Dolby TrueHD) etc

JRemote can select my Oppo 105 as DLNA renderer. No issue here

I have an Oppo UDP-203.  1080p MKV video plays fine using JRiver as a server.  (I usually just have the Oppo pull files directly via Samba, but I tried starting playback from JRemote for this thread.)

What are your settings ?

Oppo, laptop, synology nas connected via Gbit Lan.

JRiver sees Oppo and Oppo receives (counter display resets to zero) and then stops.

Has anyone pushed via laptop or does every one use JRemote ?

Thanks.

I can select the Oppo 105 as DLNA renderer from both JRemote and a JRiver client on a PC in my home LAN

here was the response from oppo re: cinavia on the oppo 203:

“The player will enforce Cinavia protection on all file systems, formats, and delivery. So a MKV that is protected by Cinavia protection will be tripped on attached USB storage, through the network, or from a physical disc.

If you connected an external device to the player, such as a HTPC with HDMI, then the Cinavia protection will not be tripped because the player is not doing the video and audio decoding from the file. So it is not aware of the Cinavia watermark.”

anyway thought i would share as this may be important to some using it as a renderer.

What are your settings ?

JRiver's DLNA server is configured to serve files as "original".  All mkv files encoded using HandBrake, from a MakeMKV rip of (owned) blu-rays.  I haven't tried other format options. (I think JRiver's default is to perform a transcoding "as necessary".)

Nothing's really changed on the Oppo (at least that I remember!)

PC and Oppo are on a Gbit LAN, off different ports of the same Asus router.

I haven't seen the Oppo behavior you describe; perhaps you are tripping some form of HDCP protection.

Can’t be cinavia since I can play file thru Smb (Oppo direct access to shared) not just thru jriver or am I missing something?

Have you tried to play around with DLNA Controller Options for the Oppo? You could try to set (x) Ignore Transport Events and/or (x) Disable Set Next Support and check if it makes a difference.

BTW: does audio work (pushing a supported music file to the Oppo)?

Audio files don't play either.

How do I get to the DLNA Controller Options ?

Okay. Got Oppo to play but play is choppy and audio stuttering both on 1080p and 2160p?

Any thoughts ?
