Is it possible to play 4K HDR via HDMI 1.4?
« on: January 28, 2018, 06:01:15 am »

Hi,

I have a projector JVC x500. This is a projector 4K with hdmi 1.4. Not compatible with HDR.
I have a graphic card Intel HD 4600 with hdmi 1.4. No compatible with HDR.

When I tray to play a mkv 4k file with BT.2020 colour (HDR) I see the gray image with little brightness

Is it possible solve it?
Is it necessary buy a new graphic card with hdmi 2.0?
Is it necessary buy a new graphic card with hdmi 2.0 + a new projector with hdmi 2.0?

Is it possible to configure jriver and madvr in some way to solve this without buying anything?

thank you!

If you are using RoHQ (madVR) it is possible to play back HDR content in Media Center.
These options may not match yours 100%, as I've created custom profiles and may have manually updated madVR on this install, but the setup is generally the same.

Go to Options > Video > Open madVR Settings to bring up the madVR configuration window.

In the "devices" section, find the calibration options for your display and configure it as appropriate.
If you don't know what that should be, tell it that the display is calibrated to BT.709 and a "Pure Power Curve" gamma of 2.20 as those as the "standard" SDR specs.

In the HDR section, you can tell madVR to "convert HDR content to SDR using pixel shader math".
The minimum peak brightness you can set is 200 nits, and the maximum 10,000 nits.
With a projector, 200 nits is likely going to be most accurate, but setting the brightness that low can cause a lot of clipping (areas turning to solid white etc).
There are options to preserve hue and compress highlights, which all come at a performance penalty but can really help improve the look of HDR on a lower brightness display.

You may want to set the HDR brightness higher than it really is for the content to look acceptable. I've found that it's generally best to have brightness set to at least 350-400 no matter what the display's actual brightness is.
You really need to watch some HDR content and play with the settings to find what looks good to you, as there's not going to be an ideal solution for displaying HDR content on a lower brightness display.

thank you for the information!!!

when I play a MKV 4K with Red October HQ my GPU is at 100% of load and the movie looks like a robot.
If I buy a new graphic card with more powerfull GPU is it possible solve this? GTX 1060 3GB is enough?
I have a CPU 4790K but my GPU is only a HD 4600.

Thank you!!!

A little off-topic, but good luck finding a graphics card at a decent price or in stock right now thanks to the cryptocurrency mining craze. 1060s seem to be one of the most popular GPUs for mining right now. I'd really recommend holding on doing that right now and not paying the inflated (and absurd) GPU prices.

I'm kinda in the same boat right now. I'd like to get a new GPU upgrade, but there's no way I'd consider getting one right now due to the mining craze and the inflated prices.

You are right, sir. I had thought of buying a second-hand one. the prices in spain of the gtx 1060 are crazy.
I second hand I can find it by 180€  :P

This is a bad idea too. Many of the second-hand GPUs in the market right now (e.g. eBay, CraigsList, etc.) were mining cards which were running 24/7 at full load. There's no telling what issues those second-hand cards would have due to them being mined on 24/7, so I'd definitely not recommend going second-hand right now either.

Honestly? There's not really much choice right now except to wait for prices to go back down. Hopefully that's sooner than later.

You are right. But my intention was to buy a card from some gamer who sells it to buy another one of greater power. Although I think that after reading your comment I will think about it and leave it for later I do not want to buy a mining card.

But with GTX1060 the problem of 4k freezee will solve it??

I would try enabling all the performance options, disabling all the post-processing, and using Bilinear or DXVA scaling to see if your HD 4600 can handle that.

You may prefer to create profiles in madVR for this, so that it only applies to UHD videos.
You could use this rule to switch between a "UHD Profile" and an "SDR Profile" for example:
Code: [Select]
if   (srcHeight > 1080) "UHD Profile"
else                    "SDR Profile"

What I've heard people claim is that miners are typically under-clocking and under-volting their cards to improve efficiency, and running 24/7 minimizes thermal cycling, so you'd be better off with a used mining card than someone's card they were using for gaming.

A 1060 should be able to handle UHD if you're playing it back 1:1.
It occurs to me that it may actually be decoding that is your issue rather than GPU performance though.
Hit CTRL+J to bring up the madVR stats and see whether it's the decoding queue or render queue causing you problems.

It confirms that your system can handle the decoding, but it's the madVR processing that your GPU cannot handle.
Bicubic scaling is being used, which is more demanding than Bilinear or DXVA.
Enabling the "trade quality for performance options" in madVR and changing the scaling settings might allow this to be playable on your system. I'm not sure as I don't have an HD 4600.

when i use red october standard, madvr disappear of the menu of jriver.
when this happens, the reproduction is fluid but the image quality is inferior. I will definitely have to buy a new graphics card. It does not make sense to search among thousands of options.

ROHQ is required for madVR support. madVR is required for HDR support.
Have you tried turning down all the madVR quality settings as I suggested?

I've select Bilinear in: chroma upscaling, image downscaling, image upscaling. the speed of reproduction has improved but it is still insufficient. It looks like a robot.
where are the other options that I should modify ?
I will definitely also have to buy a new graphics card. I have no other solution if I want to use quality filters.

with DXVA is a bit more faster but very similar, not enough speed:

out of curiosity ... those films are 23.976 fps ... and X500 accepts that ... why run it in 60fps?

in 60fps your gpu have to finish rendering under 16.6ms ... in 23.976fps it is 41.6ms

atm i run my movies (LG E6) in 23.976 and crank up image enhancement that fits into that 41ms with some margin

i usually run stuff in their original fps if display support it ... is there particular reason why ppl run their 23fps content in 60fps?

you are very right! I do not know how to do it to play the movies at 24p instead of at 60p

thank you!

In the option: Display Settings automatic change mode
What selection? ON, CUSTOM?

If my projector accept 4K at 24fps what I need to do?
If my monitor accept 2K at 30Hz what I need to do?

For my monitor Nec PA272W using displayport i only have this options available:

if option does not show 23Hz option, it means display does not support it

I put mine display setting automatic change mode to "On" ... I suggest put that ... and run few movies to see if it switches correctly before going to CUSOM

But if you do Custom ... be aware that for PC, when they put 23Hz, they really mean 23.976 fps ... so for FILMS (23.976 fps), you choose 23Hz ... and for FILMS (24 fps), you choose 24Hz

The Wiki covers it briefly here: https://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Video_Playback_Options#Display_Settings

You will need to be connected to your JVC x500 projector in order to set it up for 4K @ 24fps. It looks like you are connected to your NEC PA272W monitor in that image, so only the resolutions and refresh rates it supports are displayed. MC queries the attached device to find out its capabilities, and displays those as options for Display Settings.

For example, I'm at my Workstation using a Dell 3008WFP monitor at the moment and it isn't any better than what your image displays. It only offers 50, 59, 60, and 75 Hz, which is consistent with the refresh rates available on my monitor for the various resolutions.

In either case, monitor or projector, try setting it to "On" first, and see if that sets your display output to the best frequency.

Otherwise, use "Custom" and select the best option manually.

As tij pointed out, your JVC x500 accepts a broader range of frequencies than your NEC PA272W.

JVC x500
Video input signals   480p/576p,720p 60/50,1080i 60/50,1080p 60/50/24, 3840 x 2160p 60/50/30/25/24, 4096 x 2160p 24

I see tij just beat me. I'll post the above anyway.
