jukebox 8 won't read version 3.97 ape tags
« on: January 26, 2003, 07:00:24 pm »

I recently upgraded from 7.2 to 8.  All of my older ape files compressed with ape version 3.92 read perfectly.  For some reason none of the tags created using version 3.97 show up.  MJ recognizes them as ape files and will play them, just won't read the tags.  I verefied the tags were actually there using the monkey's audio software.

any help would be awesome, thanks

Is is it somehow possible that you've used APE 2.0 tags?  MJ only reads APE 1.0 tags.

I just figured out the difference between files whose tags will be read and files whose tags won't be read.  Using foobar2000 I discovered that the tags of files that are read, look like this:

TITLE = ********
DATE = ****
TRACKNUMBER = ***
MEDIA JUKEBOX METADATA =
    <MPL Version="1.0">
    <Item>
    <ExInfo ReplayGain="1|0|-1|0|0|" Rating="0"/>
    </Item>
    </MPL>
ARTIST = ***
ALBUM = ****
GENRE = ****

Files whose tags will not be read:

DATE = **
TRACKNUMBER = **
ARTIST = ***
TOOL VERSION = 9.0.98
GENRE = ***
TOOL NAME = Media Center
ALBUM = ****
TITLE = *****

In both cases the tag information exists, just in different forms.  I can find no correlation between the date the files were created or the version -3.97 vs 3.92 (contrary to what I had originally thought)- and whether or not the tags are read.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated

Oh... to answer your question, all files were created using MJ, so there should not be any version 2 files.

If I'm reading it correctly, the files whose tags are NOT being read were NOT made with Media Jukebox, but with Media Center 9.0.98.  That version was made available on 15 Jan 2003, so the tag was made sometime since then.

Anyway, it looks like MJ8 cannot read the ape tags made by MC9.

Things just became a bit more clear.  What happened is that a few days ago I downloaded media center and loaded all of my files into its library.  Even though I didn't use it to create any ape files it for some reason chose to modify about 75% of them (maybe when I did a mass downloading of album covers).  Well, at this point I have gotten rid of media center in favor of MJ8 but none of my tags will be read.

Has anyone run into this problem or have any reccomendations?
Is there any way to reformat the tags to a readable format?
And also, shouldn't MJ8 be able to read Media Center tags anyway?

I appreciate any help,
