JRiver MC 23, won't play my M4P files
« on: February 13, 2018, 01:50:26 pm »

I had a crash, reinstalled Windows 10, and MC23 and iTunes, and quicktime.  JRMC23 used to play all, even my M4P files; I went through the change to play with Quicktime in the files under options; they will play with itunes, they "play" with quicktime (no sound though) and ditto with JRiver MC23.  These used to play no problem...what am I missing?

Don't think this works anymore, besides Apple has long discontinued QuickTime on Windows.

thanks, obviously it does not.  But before I reinstalled windows and MC23, it worked.  Any suggestions to get it back to what it was doing before?
Thanks

If you're using the 64-bit build of MC23, it definitely won't work because it's not supported. I'd highly recommend obtaining replacement files without the DRM, if possible.

M4P files are protected, maybe whatever rights you had to play those files vanished with the re-installation? I don't know what we can do about that, QuickTime playback support is mostly a relic, as Apple doesn't really support that anymore either.

thanks, odd that they run fine on iTunes, but neither QT nor MC23.  Any other ideas for getting them to work again?  they worked fine on MC19 as well.

iTunes includes and uses its own QuickTime libraries if I recall correctly.

Not sure what you can do honestly, since I don't believe QuickTime/protected m4p files work with the 32-bit build of MC23 anymore either (according to the earlier topic), so it's likely unsupported now. Again, I'd look into obtaining DRM-free files if I were you.

If you delete them and download them again from Apple, most tracks are now distributed in a higher-quality DRM-free format.
I'd suggest backing them up first, or simply moving them out of your iTunes directory to remove them from its library, just to be safe.

I don't know a lot about it, but you might explore iTunes Match.

Here's an article about it:

I don't know a lot about it, but you might explore iTunes Match.

That is why I posted the link. It explicitly says you need an iTunes Match subscription and "The tracks must show as Matched or Purchased in the iCloud Status column in your iTunes library."

Without iTunes Match you just get the same DRM files back again.

iTunes looks at your DRM files, finds a match for it in non-DRM files, and then lets you download the non-DRM file if you have a subscription.

I think Match is the final resort unless I find a cheaper way to convert them (and my wife hates Match, when she tried it, her library was completely messed up, with ripped CDs removed etc), so I have avoided that.  Still curious that it worked fine until Windows 10, MC23, iTunes and QT were reloaded...
thanks very much

It's possible that there was some legacy component Apple has since removed from QuickTime, but was still present on your previous install.
Depending on how many tracks/albums this is, there's always the option of burning to a CD-RW and ripping it.
It's not a lossless conversion, but is an easy way around the DRM if you don't have many that need converting.
I think I only had a handful of tracks that still had DRM after I deleted and re-downloaded them again (without an iTunes Match subscription) but I did not use iTunes much at all.

An alternative may be buying used discs on Amazon/eBay. Many albums are ridiculously cheap these days. A lot of that depends on how big the library of remaining files is.
