SACD / dsd questions
« on: February 14, 2018, 12:01:12 pm »

I got MC about 6-8 months ago. Really cool sw.

Here are some questions.
- MC uses sox. I also use sox 14.4.2. But sox isn’t developed any further. Any plans to also support ffmpeg or eac3to? Just wondering - nothing pressing here other than the lack of support for sox.

- I can load audio into memory on playback by setting the appropriate MC options. If I load an sacd iso, is there a way I can only load the 2ch or mch area? I believe MC loads the whole iso. Usually, I’ll listen to one area or the other - usually not both during the same sitting.

- I listen to a lot of sacd iso’s. I’ve setup the MC mapping table so that dsd gets down-sampled to 352 or 192 - like 192 if I’m on one of my labtops. I read a few wikis and posts about the filtering applied to dsd encoded to pcm. My question is this: how does MC handle clipping detection? I don’t think MC does any two-pass processing. So for an sacd with pretty intense peaks (e.g., verdi_requiemn_muti_cso_6ch), I’d expect -3-4dB to be applied to dsd encoded to pcm at 352 (or 384). How does MC handle this type of scenario?

Thanks.

1) MC doesn't use SoX, it uses the SoX resampler (a standalone resampler library).

2) No, memory playback loads the whole file. I'd try splitting the SACD ISO using sacd_extract into 2ch and mch ISOs/files if this is an issue (as this would be the only 'workaround' for this). This is one of the reasons I don't use SACD ISOs, instead favoring splitting/extracting DFF/DSF 2ch tracks from the ISOs and using those.

3) https://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Volume_Leveling

I analyze all my audio files and use volume leveling + adaptive volume (peak level normalizing).

1. Thanks. I missed the distinction. Sox resampler is definitely using sox lib code. Anyway, no worries here. Just wondering about sox support. Ffmpeg also uses sox resampler btw.

2. That’ll work. Extract dsf files from the sacd iso using sacd_extract and load up what I’m listening to - 2ch or mch.

3. Nice. I see that MC does a two-pass approach - user initiated. Based on the volume leveling wiki, what do most prefer - leveling or applying +/- gain?

Thanks again.
